working our way back â {kane/lara}
Lara had done a lot of thinking. And planning as well, sheâd gotten back in touch with her high school friends and decided to round them all up to go to the ice rink. It was summer, sure, but it was indoors so the ice rink was always open and it was Oregon where she lived, it was always a little chilly. So she called them all up, gave them the details, and made sure to say that she expected them all to be there. The one thing she lied to herself about was the fact that she used this event as another excuse to hang out with Kane or at least be in the same vicinity. After bowling, they promised to hang out again and sheâd been thinking about that a lot but didnât want to be alone with him, it wouldâve been too weird, still. So she hauls everyone along as an excuse even though the only attendee she cares about is Kane. Itâs been exactly a week since they all went bowling together, Rachel is planning to go to the diner with Steven and Sara along with some other events that Lara wished she didnât have to miss, and Lara is in her room, getting dressed. She finishes getting ready, tucking the sweater into the plaid skirt as she bounded down the steps, taking her keys off the hook. She wishes her parents a hasty goodbye before closing the door behind her. It takes her a few minutes to actually get the car out of the driveway because sure, there would be other people there but even then, everyone would be watching her and Kane. To everyone else, she and Kane were still on weird terms, itâd be different. Even now, ever after all they talked about, she still didnât know how to approach a conversation with him. She still second guessed everything that went out of her mouth.Â
Laraâs eyes drift over to the clock in her car, suddenly realizing she was five minutes late to the event sheâd been planning. Still, she was excited, happy to talk to their old friends, happy that she could talk to Kane in a casual atmosphere. Lara winds through the roads, tapping her fingers on the steering wheel, anxious to arrive because it was beginning, her life was coming back together, back to where she wanted it to be. It makes her happy, knowing that she was almost there. She arrives then, finally, and she hurriedly gets out of the car but not before checking her makeup in her mirror, locking the door behind her and walking into the ice rink. Itâs empty. Lara checks the time then checks a text she sent to one of her friends, she didnât get the time wrong or send the incorrect one out. Twenty or so people arenât just late to a thing that Lara planned for weeks, not unless it was coordinated or something like that. Sheâs angry and a little bit hurt, something between a groan and a sigh leaving her lips as she makes her way to the bench and puts her head in her hands. Theyâd all bailed on her. Soon enough, her phone begins blowing up from text messages with excuses, a different excuse for each person and they all seemed real. Lara had no choice to be understanding but say that it was absolutely fine and that maybe next time, theyâd be able to hang out. Her head is in her hands and she stays for another five minutes before deciding that absolutely everyone had bailed on her, and she stands up from the bench, making her way towards the exit. At the door, she bumps into someone and her head is down, gulping. âIâm sorry, sorry, yeah...â She says quietly, walking around, disappointed without looking up to see who she had run into.
