Cozybug Mod Recs: Dialogue Additions + Overhauls
These type of mods are probably my favorite way to keep the game fresh, aside from adding totally new characters. A good dialogue addition or overhaul can completely change the way you feel about a character! It also keeps me from just skipping through dialogue because I've already seen it a million times before. A few of these mods add more than just dialogue, but I want to talk about them so I'm adding them here anyways lol.
All mods are 1.6 compatible, on Nexusmods. Please be aware that most dialogue mods are NOT compatible with one another, so read the descriptions carefully to see if they'll fit into your save.
Canon-Friendly Dialogue Expansion
This mod is an absolute beast of a mod, and I cannot imagine the amount of work that went into writing it! It adds new daily dialogue lines for every single vanilla NPC, and then adds marriage, festival, and loved gift dialogues on top just for fun. The style of the dialogue is very reminiscent of vanilla Stardew (as the name suggests lol), so if you're looking for something that blends in seamlessly with the original storyline/characters, then this is the mod for you.
Unlike some of the other mods I'll rec here, this one IS compatible with other dialogue mods. You just have to go into your mod settings and tell it which characters you've installed other dialogue mods for.
Haywrite's All-In-One Dialogue Expansion
This mod is actually a collection/revamp of the existing series of dialogue rewrites by the author Haywrite. Silvermoonchan has done us all the incredible favor of making them all available in one place and compatible with 1.6! These rewrites affect characters that don't often get the spotlight in other mods, like Demetrius, Linus, Willie, and Pam. Personally I really loved the changes these mods made to these characters, as their interactions felt richer and more interesting to me.
Using the mod config menu, you can also toggle each individual rewrite on and off for this mod. Perfect for if you want a different mod for certain characters, or if you don't care for some of the rewrites as compared to others.
Elliot Dialogue Expansion (CP)
Now we get into mods that affect just one character. Starting with one of my favorites - Elliot! This mod adds 150+ lines of dialogue for our favorite poet, making him even more joyful and romantic as you get to know him. I really like the tone of these dialogue additions, as I feel like they fit really well with how I see Elliot. Important to note, I'm pretty sure these don't affect marriage dialogue, so you'd need a different mod for that.
Immersive Characters - Shane by tenthousandcats
Maybe I've talked about this mod before, but honestly I couldn't care less lol. This is THE Shane mod in my opinion, and completely revolutionized how much I like him as a character. It's been added to my "must have" modlist at this point, regardless of the theme of the farm. This mod completely overhauls Shane's dialogue, making him feel like a real, interesting person with so much personality. I actually go out of my way to talk to him now! It also adds/changes some cutscenes and other details, so I encourage you to read through the whole page to learn more.
It's important to note that there is no info on SVE compat on the mod page. I can say from personal experience that you CAN play them together, you just have to be aware that there's some late-game conflict when it comes to cutscene triggers. But I got all the way through marriage and kids and didn't have any bugs or errors.
Kantrip's Older Sebastian
Another complete overhaul of a character, this time featuring Sebastian! This mod ages Sebastian up, making him Robin's brother instead of her son. He's back in the valley after some rough times, and his dialogue and events reflect that. I really enjoyed getting to know what was essentially a totally new character, and the writing and details for this mod are all really well done. There are even options to make the mod more or less "mature" via events/dialogue toggles. This mod also adds dialogue and new schedules for characters close to Seb, like Maru, Demetrius, Robin, Shane, and Elliot!
I'd encourage you to carefully read the mod page and articles for information on settings, content, and events (which can get quite complex later on!). There are also suggestions for portrait mods, which I'd recommend since seeing this dialogue come out of vanilla Seb's mouth is jarring lol. I used this one!
In my experience, Haley is one of those "love or hate" characters. This mod adds a good amount of depth to her without changing her foundations. With over 100 new lines of dialogue, you can see her grow and change as a person without giving up her existing hobbies or interests like fashion and photography! The mod also edits some of Haley's existing dialogue to make it fit with the new lines.
I am a certified Penny lover, having married her in my perfection farm. But even I can admit she lacks some depth when it comes to dialogue. This mod, by the same author as the previous one, adds over 100 lines of dialogue and edits almost all her existing dialogue to fix this! Penny now talks about her hobbies, her childhood memories, and her hopes for the future. I really loved this version of the character, it felt like she blended right in with the existing Pelican Town.
