in search of: an all encompassing knowledge is my Thesis work I created during my last year in the Indigenous Visual Culture program at OCAD University. The work is the cultivation of what I have learned in INVC and my personal experiences.
Artist Statement:
From the perspective of an Oji-Cree women who has grown up in an urban existence, in search of: an all encompassing knowledge is a response to the absence of an intimate and cultural connection to the land of my People and the places I live. This body of work is a series of large-scale images depicting land, sky, and water that were sourced from drive-by photographs shot on a number of road trips across Ontario with my father. The layering and manipulation of the photographs digitally and of the translucent materials that cover and complicate the images, addresses the absence and the depth of my intimacy within these realms. Each individual work illustrates, abstractly and realistically, the ongoing teachings offered to me from my father, and my on-going research on Anishinaabe traditional knowledge.
in search of: an encompassing knowledge frames the multiple relationships of Native sciences to the physical and spiritual connections embedded in the environment. The works are also inspired by the Cree concept of mamatowisiwin, which Indigenous scholar Willie Ermine explains as, âa capacity to tap the creative force of the inner space by the use of all the faculties that constitutes our being.â in search of: an encompassing knowledge, is a journey that joins the teachings shared by my father, my research into Native sciences, Willie Ermine and my personal experiences negotiating ancestral wisdom and personal relationships to land, sky, and water.
The mediative act of image making, layering and sculpting is a process that reveals the complexities of my ancestral relation to land, sky and water. The knowledge I am seeking can be found all around me.
