For this shoot I hoped to take my own images of skaters in action. I scouted location, Epsom skatepark and met with some skaters. They all wore similar clothing. Either tracksuit bottoms, jeans or chinos paired with a loose logo t-shirt. They all wore branded tees, specifically skate brands and sportswear, I supposed this was for comfort and flexibility. Looking at their style and clothing.
SKATERATS was an name they referred themselves to. Whist having a conversation with the skaters we were talking about what they did apart from skate. Most of them said they don’t do anything at the time being, which made them “skate rats”. I thought this term was an interesting play on words and knew I wanted to use it for my article. Keeping the language relaxed and using terms skater use is key to making the key audience obvious.
For image 1, I chose to remove the background, it had a park and metal poles, I felt to make the focus of the image the skater I should remove the distractions and and the slogan repeated. One thing I noticed when researching about brands was currently they were repeating text, slogan and imagery. I suppose this makes the subject bold and eye catching. I chose yellow for the text as the skaters tee in the image was yellow and I thought if the text “skaterats” was also yellow it would make the yellow on the tee stand out and compliment the image.
Text for this double page spread is about the skate scene and how it has changed from the past. I mentioned that skateboarding has now become an Olympic sport for 202 and I listed some concerns the skaters have for it. I felt including information about the Olympics was relevant as it is an upcoming event and a big deal in the skate scene. If I were to change this page I would add a rhetorical at the end of the paragraph to get the reader thinking; what are your thoughts on skateboarding becoming an Olympic sport?
For the second double page spread I have created a “get the look” for readers to be inspired by the style and promote the skate brands. I listed where to get, how much each garment is and the name of the item of clothing. I created an outfit on the page, including a skateboard, again to promote the brands.
For the final double page spread I used one of my images from the photoshoot. the image shows movement, I also added some graphic yellow lines to accentuate the movement.
