ADVICE FOR FUTURE STUDENTS!
Well hello there if your reading this it means you are taking RWS 1302 I am writing this to give you advice on what's to come ahead in the class for the semester. it is a wonderful class you will learn a lot! you might get over whelmed with the work at first but don't worry you will be fine the assignments aren't that bad. the teacher helps you every week with the assignments and with any questions you may have. Ms. Jasmine Villa is a very nice understanding teacher she will help you out don't worry, don't get scared by the way she talks all fast, she makes the class super fun and interacts a lot with the class.
Now to the assignments just make sure you turn them in on time! don't wait till last minute to start the homework or the major assignment or posts because the teacher can tell. and she wont let you turn them in late. just as long as you pay attention and don't forget about your deadlines you will be fine I promise! the work may seem like a lot at first but since you work on them little by little through out the weeks they aren't that bad and you'll see that you will have them done before they are actually due. because trust me I am the queen of procrastination and in this class I had no need to do so, because we already had the work done it was just the matter of putting it together, see not that bad right?
oh and since you are reading this you are probably also doing tumblr post, here's an advice for those! look at your syllabus don't forget due dates and times late work isn't excepted and that's what got many people was the time. just make sure you read what ever s assigned and you just write about it. they are never long and don't forget the hashtags and the gif those are very important!! so alright looks like you got this now go get an A!
see didn't forget my gifs!
REFLECTION:AVA
This was the most recent major assignment turned in, and it was the most fun for me! I decided to work alone on this assignment even though it could have been a project because I felt like I would of been stronger in what I was talking about since I was going through it all semester long. I decided to make the topic the struggles elementary kids have with state testing and how we as tutors parents and or teachers can help the kids pass the tests. elementary kids get tested starting in third grade all the way till senior year in high school. so I put together a poster board with programs and tips that everyone can use to help the students pass.
( I picked this one to show that the tests never end in school, we cant get rid of but we can at least help others to pass them)
I decided to do a poster board because I had the vision of making it look like a bulletin board like the teachers use in school classrooms. it didn't quite look like it in the pdf because I didn't have the backgrounds but the poster board it self came out really nice in my opinion. I interviewed five different people a teacher, tutor, substitute and two students in the programs I mentioned.
(this was me during the interviews writing down what they told me)
I learned a lot in this assignment. I learned lot about some really cool programs that help kids and I even made little business cards to hand out to the class for them to see and maybe take it home to help someone they know is struggling. I used a lot of the information learned throughout the semester I used a lot of the tips and helpful strategies the chapters told me like how to make a clear and understandable question and how to get clear useful information. what I could of probably done a little better could of been my pdf I could find the background I was really using but I could of tried a little harder to make it look a little better.
REFLECTION: LITERATURE REVIEW
The Literature Review was the second major assignment we did in the class and I think it was my best. A lot of hard work was put into this assignment through out the weeks of working on it. this paper was based on the same topic as my GA assignment the ways of teaching. Since we worked on this and we had to turn in something every week it really helped me out with my procrastination problem because by the time the paper was due I had is almost done just needed a couple fixes up here or there.
(how i was thinking on what to write about)
I really liked how the teacher helped us out a lot on it as well.she had us revise it a couple times with her the classmates and the UTEP writing center, which I think helped out a lot in the writing in fluency part of it all. for my LIT Review I decided to do a survey which any didn't do because they thought the survey would be hard but honestly I think it was pretty easy and fun since I surveyed kids from a local elementary. my paper touched based on how kids process things thought by the teachers and since I am an education major this really helped and came in handy. my paper was very informative and felt like if I was writing a book, I believe mine was about 7-10 pages long not including the cover page or references page.
( this is how I felt my literature review looked like after I was done with it)
The hardest thing about this paper well for me at least was dealing with the kids they were very sensitive when it came to asking them the questions. but once I had my work all together the easy part was putting it all together. what I could have done a little better would have been to be a little more specific and my in text citation that one was hard to do. to actually cite them though out. but overall I think it went pretty well.
(this was me when I saw what grade I got on it!)
REFLECTION: Genre Analysis
This was the first major assignment we had in the class and I have to admit it was probably the trickiest paper I have ever written. The rubric was a little intense like for example third person and you would think writing in third person isn't that hard until you are half way down the paper and you realize you've said you I me like ten times. I know because it happened to me. a few words of advice pick out a good video and a good essay that you are able to get every information you can out of it.
(this is how my paper looked like for a couple hours until I finally got all my ideas together)
in this assignment I liked how it made me really examine what the author was really trying to say. and how we had to look at all the details. it really opened my eyes and helped me see the next few articles and videos I saw after that. it made me question how everything was done for a reason for example why did they use that font or why that song. the chapters through out the class that we read during this assignment also really helped me. for my paper since it had to relate to my major I chose the magic teachers create video and the learned the hard way essay. since my major is education.
(I chose this gif because since I am an education major this gif showed the different parts of education math science etc..)
I did fairly decent on this assignment it took me a while to finish it but by the end of the paper I felt confident that I did good on it. and I learn a way lot more then what I thought I was going to! one thing I wish a little better on this assignment was being more specific in this assignment you had to mention almost every detail and I missed a couple of them. but it sure did open my eyes into really seeing what the purpose behind the thing I am watching is.
(this is how I felt reading and analyzing the papers and videos I was watching through out this assignment.)
TUMBLR REFLECTION
When I first started this class I thought it was going to be the same as RWS 1301 but it was actually really different. I learned a lot more in this class then I ever did in 1301. I learned how to come up with clear and to the point ideas for any paper I will be writing. I learned how to write more clearly. when I first came into the class we were told that we were going to be keeping up with a tumblr post and at first I wasn't to sure about it but as it went on I was alright with it I enjoyed reading the other students posts and learning a little more about each of them. in the beginning of the semester I wasn't so sure on how to write a good paper but after all the key notes I learned from the book writing in transit I learned a lot more and it actually came in handy because I did alright in each of the major assignments.
This tumblr really helped out with my multimodality and using mixed media they really helped me express how I was really feeling through out the readings. when ever I needed an extra way of expressing my thoughts I would use a really good gif to show the emotions. just like this one below shows how I feel writing this post on my reflections through out the semester.
week 3 response: http://karinagarcia0909.tumblr.com/post/149985353024/week-3-reading-response this chapter gave us the modes of analysis that we are more then likely to encounter. this post and reading helped me out a lot through out my work making it one of the top posts.
week 7 response: http://karinagarcia0909.tumblr.com/post/151275848059/week-7-rr this post talked about chapter 5,6 and 3 on the handbook. I honestly think this one was a hard one but it helped me out a lot more then the others. it talked about correcting the common mistakes we make while writing and the myths we encounter in writing.
http://karinagarcia0909.tumblr.com/post/150989735159/this-weeks-assignment-was-to-read-chapter-3-and-4 this post also made it to the top three because the video and chapter 3 and 4 really helped me out as well. these helped me out a lot on creating the research questions for all the major assignment this semester. and it also gave me strategies for posing the questions. I really liked how it the chapter talked about maintaining significance.
I really liked how we used tumblr instead of blackboard like other classes. with tumblr we were able to see the others post and that came out in handy sometimes. I really also liked reading what the other were coming up with. I feel like we were all able to connect more as a class then when we just turn the assignments on blackboard where we cant see any ones work.
I really wouldn't change anything about the tumblr post it was all pretty good. we connected as a class and it was way more fun then the normal blackboard.
I give tumblr two thumbs up!
Reflection
Since the semester is about to end , I learn so many things each week. Mostly likely I learn how to become a better writer as well to understand each type of analysis, genres and summaries. I liked each week but only 3 weeks helped me so much and will continue to help me in the future. From week 1 to the last week it changed in so many ways because at the beginning of the semester i did not know how to do my assignments and was completely lost most of the time.
week 2 http://lucy-enriquez44.tumblr.com/post/149656330705/reading-response
week 3 http://lucy-enriquez44.tumblr.com/post/149978800830/response-reading-3
week 6 http://lucy-enriquez44.tumblr.com/post/150937187675/reading-response
I selected this three top post because these posts help me in so many way during the semester especially for my papers. Also they are going to help me in the future because i will be analyzing stuff every day also having to come up with good questions . Especially since my career will be in the medical field and will be using it everyday.
multimodality help me so much because i got all my information for my papers in social media as well getting in contact with some doctors by email. Most important on to keep in touch with professors and is easier to do homework.
Did not like tumblr that much because im not a big fan of blog pages .It was easier to do the assignments here that in blackboard but at the same time had a little bit of problems using tumblr. I sed tumblr to communicate with my classmates instead of blackboard because i get the notifications faster than in blacboard. Also what i would change about tumblr is the add post they have as well putting the accounts on private. That way we are approve certain people other than that tumblr is kinda easy to use.
hey lucy, i liked your post, i could really relate to it a lot. i totally get what you mean by you learned more and more through out the weeks in this class i felt to like 3 really helped me out as well. during the weeks of the lit review and general analysis were pretty intense but i really enjoyed the work that came out at the end. i also thought the same when you said that this tumblr account was a lot easier then using blackboard. blackboard can be a little tricky to figure out sometimes and tumblr made that easier for sure. nice gif by the way loved that movie!
Tumblr Reflection
At the start of the semester I was told that this class would practically be the same as RWS 1301 but with the use of Tumblr by classmates and I immediately hated it. I couldn’t believe that i would waste an entire semester on pretty much the same class and therefore I huffed and buffed to class each week for the first month. My thinking of this class began to change when I saw that although much of RWS 1301 was implemented, this class went farther into what it takes to be an effective written. The Genre analysis and Literature Review really tested me in a way I felt no other assignments had before. My writing therefore improved and my skills regarding effective analysis skyrocketed. Now that this class is coming to an end I am left wondering, how much more is there for me to learn? I was so naive in thinking I knew it all at the start of the semester that I know feel like I am still a novice. Implementing data is an area that improved the most for myself, I never really took into account how much work effective data analysis took and I now have a deeper resect for journalist and writers. My GIF below shows a pretty good image of myself trying to write a Literature review and genre analysis, to say it kicked my butt would be an understatement as it did a lot more than just that.
The use of Tumblr allowed me to get comfortable with the use of multimodality and mixed media. At the start of the semester I had no idea what Tumblr even was or why people use it. Th use of videos, GIFS, pictures, and more really allowed me to express myself in a way that words couldn’t. I feel like the use of multi media allows me to really grasp that emotional feel that words sometimes cant. This became very useful when explaining certain things week in and week out. During the semester I learned that that an effective student is not only required to master the traditional writing but also the technological advances this new age has, I believe this to be true now more than ever. With so much technological media and advances its important to be fluent in all these areas as more and more people now a days get their news and entertainment online rather than a traditional print. With the use of multi media I am also able to attract more audiences, especially the younger generation that rely on new advances and online communication. I couldn’t be more satisfied with the use of Tumblr this semester, it allowed me to grasp an understanding of another social media tool as well as communication between my classmates this semester. The bottom GIF shows my reaction to Tumblr from the start of the semester to the end and how my emotions towards it changed.
The following posts are my personal favorites from the semester:
Week 12 Framing Arguments
http://gustavorodriguez89blog.tumblr.com/post/152839399329/week-12-reading-response
Week 12 centered on framing arguments and this caught my attention more than any other chapter in the book. This chapter allowed me to understand the importance of arguments which included that its not always about wining the argument, something that I didn’t know. This chapter helped me understand the literature review and helped me write my paper. I can honestly say this chapter was the most influential for me this entire semester. At the time of this post the presidential debates were also going on and I loved having the opportunity to call out Donald Trump on his hypocrisy. Being able to use SNL skits regarding the presidential debates was an added bonus. Sadly after the election I felt stuck in depression for the next week but thats a story for some other time.
Week 7 Summaries and Research
http://gustavorodriguez89blog.tumblr.com/post/151272538889/week-7-reading-response
Week 7 reading response was one that I felt I did an exceptionally good job as it incorporated 3 different readings. That week was one leading up to the Lit review and the chapter going over effective summaries really helped me out a ton. With so many sources to use on the Lit review it was important to implement them effectively and this became a lot harder than I expected. Thankfully this week 7 gave me a good understanding of how to properly do it and it also gave me the resources I needed that were available to me here at UTEP. This post also had plenty of classmates responding to it so it made me feel they really gravitated to what I was saying and made me really proud of my work that week.
Lit Review Topic Proposal
http://gustavorodriguez89blog.tumblr.com/post/150619397289/lr-topic-proposal
The post regarding the lit review proposal is now one of my favorites because it makes me realize how naive I was going into this project. I was told this was the biggest assignment of the semester and I brushed it off feeling pretty confident in my abilities as a writer, I quickly realized how hard it would be. Not only did I change my 3 questions over and over and over again but analysis data and putting it all together became a task that not only took a lot of time but also a lot of hard work. Looking back at this post makes me chuckle now as I cant believe how I viewed it before even starting it. Regardless of this fact I loved my proposal, its one I’ve been talking about since last semester in RWS 1301 and its one that is very personal to me. Being able to speak about this to my peers and other outside of class is something I have enjoyed doing and I hope to continue this in order to raise awareness.
Using Tumblr was a unique experience and I learned over the semester to really enjoy it.While I do believe that it is added work instead of just simply submitting it on blackboard, Tumblr allowed me to express myself in ways that texts wouldn’t, it also allowed me to use my personality and humor instead of making it dull and boring. This is probably my favorite thing about tumblr, college can be tedious and boring at times and having something like tumblr allows us students to enjoy what we are doing. Lets face it, who really enjoys writing about writing? not many of us. I believe tumblr allowed us to communicate with our classmates and in a way forced us to get to know one another. This was something really unique as I have classes where I only the names of the few students sitting next to me. Tumblr was a great way of deriving what we had read that week and read others responses to see their perspective on it as well, personally I loved the Tumblr experience and would not change anything about it.
You had mentioned in your response that you were unaware of the Tumblr app. It may be better that you didn’t know about it. This is the second time I am responding to your post. Why? Because I initially wrote and tried to submit via the app on my iPad. Guess which app decided to crash at that exact moment and delete my post? Yeah…
(My reaction)
Anyway, I was saying something about your mentioning how we get to know each other through Tumblr. Another point is that the openness of it, allowing others to read and comment on your work kind of prepares you for when you use your skills in real life. You’ll be dealing with strangers, and trolls who don;t know who you are and have no qualms about ripping you a new one just to make themselves feel better. That’s all I remember of my original post…
(”Dammit Tumblr!! Bring back my original post!! NOW!!”)
Good thing you at least exercised some level of patience, which gave you an opportunity to eventually have a reason to change your thinking about the class. Patience was the only thing that gave me the opportunity to learn everything i learnt in this class. At the beginning of the semester, most times, i don’t even understand about 50% of what am suppose to do and I wont even ask questions until I get home and email the professor. At a point I felt like professor Jasmine was tired of me especially when she does not reply my email. However, I gradually began to understand how the class works. I was able to discover myself more rhetorically which helped me achieved the best the class could offer.
Thanks professor Jasmine for putting up with all my disturbing emails.
hey gustavo i really enjoyed reading your post, when the semester started i also didn't know what tumblr was used for,but once the semester kept going along i really began to enjoy it as well. I too believe it really helped out in the expressing and showing how you really felt. The gif were sometimes really funny or sometimes i could really relate to what some of the students wrote on their post for the day. this semester was intense it was easy but hard at times. and i can totally relate to how you felt with both the lit review and the general analysis. they were tricky. now the semesters coming to an end i realized that i learned a lot more then i realized i was going to since i heard the same as you did when it came to this class was going to be the same as 1301. but i really enjoyed it.
Advanced Visual Argument Outline
I will be creating a poster on the on the lack of hands on activity in the classroom regarding the engineering department, and how that affects future potential after graduating from the university.
Side note: This poster is not degrading the value of the education received here at UTEP, rather it is stating that it would be arguable to have more hands on activity rather than theory implementation.
The template of the poster will have an organization technique that could grab someones attention right away, but also entitle extreme professionalism since the audience would be the department of engineering. There would be three columns to explain the problem that I have. Simplicity yet straight forward-ness is what will be key to propose the problem and a solution that we might have.
I will acknowledge the points against this agrument and are to be stated in the poster.
Problem:
The problem is stated above and furthermore, yes it can be argued that it is up to the students discretion to take what is learned from labs and lectures to implement these techniques on their own time.
Yet, It is difficult when the labs are exactly the same every year and can be accessed very easily. A challenge is what is needed to further the education.
Spend more time in labs for real life problems rather than in theory.
Poster
The poster will have three columns as a professional poster, will obtain a credible font, be clear and concise.
The language would be professional, all grammar would be checked and revised.
List the current advantages and disadvantages to curriculum now.
Compare and contrast school cirrocumuli of top-tier schools to UTEP.
Have certain colors that appeal to the sense of pathos.
Establish the credibility of the statements used from past graduates.
Use personal experience to explain to problem through the poster.
Solution:
The solution to the problem would be to create a petition among current undergraduates and graduates.
Advocate for policy changes in the department
List graphs and charts of the correlation between a degree at UTEP and jobs.
Speak to employers and see what type of questions they may ask in an interview or what they expect when applying to certain position in their company.
Visual:
Visual as explained earlier would be charts and graphs (statistics to enhance the agrument
Use certain colors that are both professional and attention grabbing.
Use a fonts that is clear and not difficult to read.
Create the poster so that it is easy understand and is well organized.
I really think your topic is nice and clear, I like your idea on the visuals I think they will help your problem and solution very well. I really think your solution is good, the petition as well might take some work but non the less its a good idea. i will also be using a poster:) I feel like a poster like you said is simpler in the fact that it can be more straight forward and to the point. I will also be interviewing a couple people as well but mine will be teachers, nice job on this outline, I look forward to seeing your end product.
Reading response wk12
For this weeks response we had to read chapter 8 and 9 from the wit book.
Chapter 8 was basically about framing arguments. it started talking about Namoratunga and it was basically arguing the fact that it has a larger significance then what we thought. Then it went on to the common myths about arguments. it showed us 5 myths in arguments. my favorite one was myth number 2 and it was about how arguments involve only highly debated issues, because if you think about it thats whats everyone thinks a argument is. people constantly argue about many things in their daily lives, like the basic ones they mention freedom of speech and abortion, i feel like if i mention either or ill be stuck in an argument for hours with people because of everyones different values and opinions. then it went one how explaining about what an argument is, i really liked how much knowledge i got out of this little paragraph here because it told me exactly what it is. arguments are claims, thesis, proof, positions.it helps us illustrate how the notion of arguments shifts depending on the context. then a little further on in the reading it went on into the purposes of arguments. and it really emphasized persuasion. then it gave out commonly deployed purposes.
( i picked this gif because after reading this chapter i feel like i got this, i can do this AVA poster) and y'all can too:)
chapter 9 was about constructing arguments. it started of with the questions that shape the arguments. i really liked the chart given on page 224 because it was very detailed on each point in the questions. then it went on to the inductive and deductive reasoning. inductive involves the moving from examples to general assertions and deductive is moving general to the particular. i really liked how the chapter gave us the structure of the assignment as well.
i feel like after reading these two chapters I've gotten more knowledge on what a argument is and how to structure everything. which will help out a lot in the ava.
how i felt after reading both chapters, mind blown.
AVA outline
The AVA project is done by me, myself and I. For this project I am sticking to the teaching and students topic, as some of y’all know. It’s going to touch base on the struggles the elementary students have with preparation for the EOC, STAR. I will touch base on how the teachers have to stick to the Common Core to prepare for these state testing. Within this poster I will state a couple different programs and different teaching strategies the tutors and teachers can do to better the learning for the kids. My audience will be for the teachers, tutors and parents. My poster will be breaking down into different parts. For example; the problem, solutions, references, visuals. My visuals will be a chart, which will show the statics of the students and how the state testing has gotten harder and how these programs can help the kids better their scores. For my references I will have a couple of the same one of my lit review but I will add in some more for the programs. And I will also interview 3rd, 4th, 5th grade teachers from an elementary school here in El Paso. This all combined will give my poster more creditability.
( For some reason my mac does not want to focus on the outline but this is a basic outline of my poster) the interviews are missing because they will happen this week on Thursday and Friday and i am missing some parts to it. i decided to post this pic so y'all can see what is basically is going to be.
This gif represents the amount of papers i have between all the research and interviews i have from this assignment.
hope y'all like it and kinda understand it :)
Yancey
Yancey’s “Made Not Only in Words: Composition in a New Key” the article talked about how there was traditional writing on paper in the 19th century and how in the 21st century there is so many other ways of writing with new technology available including social media and blogs. It used to be that writing was more of a school thing rather than something “fun”. Rather than in Today’s generation that it isn’t something mandatory to do but people see as more in as a way to relaxing (blogs). The author also states that, “Richard Lanham, of course, has argued that with the addition of the digital to the set of media in which we compose, delivery takes on a critical role” meaning that technology has taken a turn for the better.
I used this GIF to show that the printing press has changed
As a political science major there is many things that have to be done as researching articles and current events. The current events and scholar articles it is not only seen in traditional books but it is also found on the internet. There are many articles that are written by various sources and this sources have been written by people who have written used the technology. Technology has given us so many advantages as getting our resources.
I agree with what you said in your response on how it used to be that writing was something you had to do for school rather then something fun. now in days there are a lot of people who have blogs and they do it for a living. when people use social media they write and write. that's cool how you are a political science major you are constantly learning and researching current events that's pretty cool. I also believe that technology does given many advantages to getting the resources we need.
Reading Response
Kathleen Blake Yanceys article “Made Not Only in Words: Composition in a New Key” talks about something that affects us all. In the article she writes about the history of writing and the differences of the 19th and 20th century writing. I think it’s incredibly true about how she says that most people nowadays barely read and when they do it’s through social media. She brings up examples, but I find it very relatable, because I catch myself only getting any reading done when I’m on social media. I rarely even touch a book unless it’s for a class, I think it’s also a good piece to read because our work is done on social media, Tumblr. This does actually relate to my major too, I remember language teachers always telling me to just go on my social media and follow French natives and stuff like that to really help with my reading in French. So I think when I’m a teacher I would encourage some social media use for educational purposes I mean it’s not all that bad. She also went into some history, but I just learned about the Industrial Age not that long ago in my history class. Overall I think it was very informative and I think it’s gave some tips to help with my writing too. (Me on social media)
I really agree with what you said on not grabbing a book unless its for class, I am the same way, unless I need to i don't grab a book. i usually use the different social media in todays world to get my news and gossip i guess you can say. i really like your gif as well how the girls are on their phones reading probably some celebrity news haha jk. but i really did enjoy this article because it gave us some views on how reading and writing really has changed a lot.
In the article “Made Not Only in Words: Composition in a New Key”, by Kathleen Blake Yancey compared and contrasted the 19th century and the 21st century. Back in the 19th century technology played a major role with the new steam printing press and cheaper paper, reading material became more accessible(19th century) now in days people read much less due to technology, people only read through social media. the article told us that around this time it was called the Industrial Age. before paper was used to be simple only putting ideas now the new literacies you have to develop certain steps.it also talks about how writing now and days is shown or expressed by social media, blogs. the main point of the article was basically literacy is a powerful thing we use in our lives now matter how much it changes we approach writing through out our days. like the author said what we might call a series of newly imagined communities, communities that cross borders of all kinds—nation state, class, gender, ethnicity we all participate in writing.
( I picked this gif because we all start of with tools to write and create on a paper)
I liked this article a lot I learn a couple things about writing, it helped me a bit in my assignment, if I never need help on my topic I can always refer back to this article, this also relates to my major quite a bit because as a teacher I am going to be writing and reading a lot which helps both me and my students.
(I picked this gif because we use social media everyday to read and find out either gossip or news but we still read throughout these)
( I also picked tis gif because I'm going to be a teacher mr.feeny is a teacher and who doesn't love this show it was a good one.
AVA topic
This topic is a little hard for me to choose, but I think I am going to stick to my pervious topic with the ec-6 students. I am contemplating on doing a poster or video most likely a poster. I am willing to work with a group but I might do it alone. see very undeceive. My topic is going to be the struggles of elementary students and the problems they encounter and how parents and teachers can help them achieve. I choose this because I am going to be an elementary school teacher and I would like to be able to help my students.
I picked this gif because the struggle for the kids in school is real, school can be very changeling.
Week 7 Reading Response
Chapter 5 is about summaries, debunking myths about them, and how they serve different purposes (lmao a summary about summaries, there are so many times of summaries!) I liked how early at the beginning of the chapter they debunk myths about summaries, it is a nice way to catch your attention and continue reading one. I had never thought before about how summaries are not objective, but depend on the context and purpose they were written for. I will be using summaries throughout my professional career. In marketing, you write communications and strategy briefs to officially define the job you are going to perform. It is basically a summary of expectations and resources that the client will turn in, or that you will turn in to your supervisor before starting a project. The information from this chapter will be helpful when it comes to summarize information from sources for the literature review and writing the abstract. It is not about summarizing the paper you are reading but the information you need to fulfill your purpose. It prompts me question how many correct or accurate summaries i have actually written before.
(mythbusters felt like the right choice for a gif after reading about some summary myths being debunked)
Chapter 6 is about synthesis, their purpose, and the criteria to write an effective one. I learned that a synthesis is not only a written thing, Stonehenge is a synthesis because it was multidisciplinary engineered, it was a put together from different elements to make something quite complex. In my understanding, a marketing strategy is a synthesis from different disciplines, some psychology, some publicity, some accounting. I am still thinking about how I might use the synthesis in the literature review assignment, but I cannot come up with something at the moment. Maybe down the road I will find it useful. I did not like to see math as an example, flipped the page real quick. Oh, after reading 2 more pages I realized that the whole literature review is a synthesis of multiple sources! It makes me wonder if we can use different types of synthesis on the same text.
(now everytime I hear the word “synthesis” im going to picture this. Breathtaking)
Chapter 3 from the Handbook, goes on about how to start doing research, primary and secondary, and how to use existing resources, such as the UTEP library to help you do so. I attended a brief workshop last year to get an idea on how to use the library’s resources but it is always nice to go over it again, and keep it fresh now that I am going to be doing a ton of research. Researching skills will come in handy in all majors, research does not suddenly stop after you graduate. I usually use scholar.google.com for all my research necessties but I might give the library’s online resources this time.

Misleading Interview and Survey Questions is an article about the 7 most common mistakes when writing questions. for my primary research I am not going to be doing a survey, but an interview still requires of carefully crafted questions to get answers that can be used in the literature review. I liked that they give more than one example. When surveying customers, or a sample target market, the questions you ask will determine the accuracy of your results, so these tips are a good start, and something I will definitely be using later on.
OMG the first part of your blog reminds me of the show ‘Pimp My Ride’ it’s like “yo dawg I heard you like summaries so here’s a summary about summaries so you can summarize while you summarize”. Myth busters was one of my favorite shows growing up and now that I think about it at the end of every myth they would summarize their findings. Hopefully we don’t have to run around like chickens with their heads cut off when we are doing research since the book explained how to use the library and the data base as well. I have to interview somebody for my lit review hopefully I don’t mess that up.
I agree with your analysis Pmalegria especially on the misleading interview and survey question. When I took a second look at the information on blackboard, I realize how significant the way we word questions is. If a question is worded wrongly, it will generate inadequate response which will lead to undesired result. The article sure gave idea on how to come up with good questions through examples which is necessary for the literature review assignment. We just need to keep things as focused as possible. This gif is a reminder to keep questions focused
hello I like your connection to the reading I pretty much was thinking the same things during the reading. I still am not quite sure on either doing a survey or an interview but I might be leaning towards a survey at the moment I have some questions and have done some research on both as well, but still very undeceive. I also liked how the chapter gave us information in the survey and the interview part. the part about the targeting customers and all that caught my eye as well.
Week 7 Reading Response!
This week we had to read chapter five and chapter six. Chapter five talked a lot about summaries, the myths that come with it, and overall how to write an effective one. In my honest opinion, I don’t really think it was the most important chapter to me, since like our teacher told us in class, our abstract, as long as we have one, we will get credit for it. Yet, since the abstract is the first thing a reader reads when it comes to our lit review, I do think it was still an important read, and plus, I could always learn how to summarize better since I do use that a lot. Chapter six talks about synthesis, which is basically taking everything you have researched and written and putting it together to make it one paper. I thought this chapter was pretty useful, since that’s where I think I will struggle, taking everything and putting it together, while still making it flow. As for the blackboard reading, that one talked about misleading questions (mainly for our interview or survey that we will use in our lit review). Out of all I think this one helped me the most, I’m probably going to do an interview over a survey and this really helped with what type of questions to ask and refrain from asking. It also helped how to word them to get the information you need, which is incredibly important for this review. This went really well with chapter 3 from the handbook which talked also about questions for our lit review, but also how to do the research and where. I already know most sources we can use for this, but like I said I think the whole part where it talks about our questions is so useful, the questions we will ask can make or break our paper. (this particular gif is me processing everything and trying to prepare for the lit review)
Its weird how many thought that these chapters were important except for you but hey… everyone has different opinions. When it comes to writing the the abstract even though the teacher did mention that as long as its there it will get credit, I still believe that the abstract on one of the most important chapters in a paper because the reader always want to know what they are getting themselves into and if its worth the reading.
(this picture is to show that we always need to be careful and watching what we do so we don’t get in trouble)
Something that keeps bugging me is how in the world I am going to make a rubric acceptable lit analysis with all the information that I need to acquire and combine it all together AND for it to make sense from beginning to end.
(thats going to be me when I need to combine all my research into one)
hello as I was reading your response I sorta agreed with your connection to the abstract but I sorta didn't. I do believe that many people skip the abstract when they are reading any book or article or anything really, but I do personally read it sometimes to just get an idea of what I will be reading be about. I really liked chapter five and six as well I think it will be great knowing these things for our lit review. I personally don't know if I am going to do a interview or survey but I'm leaning more towards the interview even though I have ideas for both.
