Earlier today Old Fadama in central Accra, the largest electronic waste dump on earth was partially bulldozed. The inhabitants of what Accra has come to know as Sodom and Gomorrah will have to relocate elsewhere as their settlement continues to get in the way of the city’s drainage project. If the structures don’t go back up like we are used to seeing and the city authorities do their fucking job, Accra just might not flood when the storms come. photos- Emmanuel Bobbie.

Sigh. This is a so frustrating. Yes, there are SOME structures built on the lagoon BUT the lagoon could be unclogged without rendering 100,000 citizens homeless. I interviewed one of the officials responsible for the Korle two years ago and he admitted they really only need to get rid of the few houses along the immediate banks of the lagoon. This is not the city authorities doing their jobs because actually destroying livelihoods has no ecological or hydrological benefit. Old Fadama has been bulldozed repeatedly in the past decades with zero effect on flooding. They want to get rid of the entire thing (far more than they need for flood-prevention) because that piece of land is ridiculously valuable and has been hotly-contested since pre-colonial times. And so the AMA uses the bulldozing as a distraction, a smoke-screen to detract from the fact that they have actually not commitedly done anything to fix the flooding. The water problems start well before the Odaw River even passes by Old Fadama because there are dozens of buildings and dumpsites (even a house belonging to an MP!) that are blocking the water. And yet instead of being responsible enough to address the entire picture, the AMA will bully the poorer masses but leave those rich people’s houses standing over there. If they are committed to actual flood-prevention let them get rid of all the real impediments to drainage regardless of whose name is on the title deed of whatever house. Otherwise let’s refuse to be impressed by this nonsense.

I have been here, multiple times! By referring to the order as a “Little Rosa”, you don’t have to make as big a deal out of the fact that you’re seeking help.

And believe it or not, it gets better. Rosa’s also gives out sweatshirts to the homeless (or sells them to the general public) that has information on local soup kitchens and even computer training in the area, on an insert sewn inside the sweatshirt.

Hi Tumblr. My name is Shane Burcaw, and I’m the hipsterly-dressed dinosaur creature in the wheelchair above. The beautiful girl is my girlfriend Anna. We were climbing a mountain (in Tom’s and khakis, obviously).

As some of you know, I created a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, Inc. to help people living with my disease. Look at my (sexy) bod in the pic above: keeping that hunk of man meat alive is expensive as hell. From breathing machines, to feeding tubes, to the bathroom equipment that lets me poop when I need to, the cost of living with SMA is astronomical. Luckily, I have always had the items I need, but there are thousands of people in my position who don’t have those things.

I can change that, like forreal. And I’m not going to stop until I do.

I’ve created a program through my nonprofit called No More Nightmares. The idea is simple: We give away the vital items that people with muscular dystrophy need to thrive. If I can change one life, I’ll be happy, but my dream is to change the world.
