White water buttercup is a plant as cute as it is sinister. The common name applies to several species of Ranunculus are called this, and unfortunately they’re near impossible to differentiate without a good key. This individual, found in Iowa, is possibly R. longirostris or R. aquatilis. Although they have cute flowers, they’ve also been suggested to have contributed to several drownings, as their stems can easily become tangled around a swimmer’s limbs. In the summer, they grow extremely densely on some lakes, making boating a challenge and swimming dangerous.
