The question throws her off, which is seen in the way that the box clicks harshly against the surface. She slides it into the perfect spot before turning to see Karyna’s expression. She doesn’t know what’s the right excuse to use — what is the thing that she does not know or understand and should try to hide. “Sure I have, how else would have I gotten the invitation to the birthday?” By a text message but that is a silly irrelevant detail.
there is a temptation to draw the conversation out with grace, dropping bait disguised as pleasantries, to see how much of a fool karyna could make of fanni whilst she had the upperhand in earning tekla's trust. isn't it incredible how she isn't showing yet? she could've asked, if she cared about tekla less, and, in a way, by extension, fanni. “ it has been seven months. ” her words carry a blunt edge such that if they were to reach fanni, they would sink in slowly. “ fanni, you cannot stand there and tell me you haven’t thought something was wrong. ”

“ he wants you to feel sorry for him. ” she fights the urge to roll her eyes. “ and what did you say to that? are you here to talk to me about it and help him? ”
When Petro finally gets Marya back to Karyna’s apartments he’s exhausted, overheated and has the worst tan lines of his life. His feet may never again stop having two white strips on them. But the youngest member of the family hasn’t stopped looking at the hair wrap since she got it an hour ago and she even got them both tie on bracelets that match it. So it was a successful afternoon. “Ryna we’re back!” He calls out as Marya is already getting herself distracted by the television. “We passed a tapas place that looked cool for dinner but they only open at like 8″ @karynasoletskaya
she tends to marya first, greeting her with a hug and kiss and turns the volume up just a little bit before she directs her attention to her second child. a sharp glare is thrown in petro’s direction once she leaves marya by the couch. “ that sounds lovely. ” her tone doesn’t match her expression as she walks towards petro. she demands him to follow her into the kitchen with a simple look. hands on her hips, lips pressed into a thin line, she lifts her chin upwards and the gaze that lands on him says: explain.
Out of curiousity she glanced at the nametag on the presents. An amused humm escaped her. “Oh? They won’t reach Tekla from there, will they?” Karyna wouldn’t show up to a baby shower without something with her — had she come up with something even better? Or was it that the baby shower that Fanni had not even heard about had been cancelled because of the move?
the question makes her smile stiffens first then the rest of her body follows. slowly, she looks over her shoulder. for the first time in a long while, she regards fanni honestly. there’s a coldness that’s revealed in her stare, honed with disappointment. “ you haven’t spoken to tekla? ” her voice was taut with disbelief, something she didn’t care to hide in this moment.
“Quite special… that’s so lovely.” So now Fanni would have to above and beyond to avoid looking like a terrible godmother next to the forgettable aunt. “Of course, it’s easier to show than to tell.” Surely Karyna had enough words to describe a 3-year-old’s present for God’s sake? Fanni stepped inside the hotel room, eyes briefly scanning the room to see if it differed greatly from her own. Fortunately it did not.
karyna looks around the room, trying to remember where she’d put nilsa’s present. mild irritation pricks at her skin knowing she hasn’t been able to locate her things after the move, all of which she blames petro for. “ oh, now why is this here, ” she huffs, rummaging a cupboard. “ i told them to send this back to ukraine. ” she takes out a box of baby gifts and holds it out to fanni. “ can you put this to the side for me please, darling? ”
“Karyna! This is lucky.” Only that time. Any other time she would have gladly avoided running into her cousin. “I need to ask you about Nilsa’s birthday — have you already bought a present? I just want to make sure there will be no doubles.” ( @karynasoletskaya )
“ ah yes! what a great idea. ” because clearly they have the same taste. “ i got her something a while ago, it’s quite special. oh, you might as well come and see it. i’m only round the corner and we can catch up. it’s been a while. ”
elyse started at her for a moment, blinking big, doe eyes. “um, yeah, i can take a look. i mean, no one’s fridge should be that forward with them.”
“ thank you, darling. you’ve saved me from at least three migraines. ” she opens the door to her house and welcomes elyse in. “ can i get you a drink? something to eat? ”
“I can take a look at it. It shouldn’t be too hard to discern. A simple AI in a lower tech appliance is a simple fix. Would you like it call you ‘ma’am’ or ‘ your grace’. We can probably also change its accent..”
“ oh no, ” she laughs. “ karyna is just fine. getting a kitchen appliance to use formalities would be a little extreme, don’t you think? bixby has feelings, apparently. and i never knew you were such a tech whizz, darling! a very handy skill to have in this day and age. ”
- ‘ THE CLASSIC sibling banter. yeah, no problem really, i’m very used to being asked for help with electronics. my father thinks working with social media is the same as being a computer engineer or something like that. how old’s your daughter, if you don’t mind me asking ? ’
“ oh, i’m sure the only difference between yourself and a computer engineer is that you’re far too pretty to pass as one. but social media, how interesting! what is it you do? ” karyna fears marya will grow up glued to her phone, posting bikini photos for attention. “ marya, that’s my daughter’s name, she’s five and she’s begging for an ipad already. ”
- ‘ I GUESS you could say so but, yes, i can help you out. did someone do that to prank you or… ? ’
“ yes. my brother, petro, he likes to think he’s funny. ” karyna did not laugh once. “ and my daughter seems to think so too! but it has been driving me crazy, so thank you for the help. ”
she looks at the woman in front of her, eyes narrowing immediately. she probably has a samsung fridge. gross. “ and you think i care enough to help fix this little problem of yours? don’t you have staff for this? ”
she smiles sweetly but the curve of her lips are taut. the reaction is strange. karyna puts it down to the other’s upbringing. “ oh, i don’t like to waste their time over trivial things. ” she has, and she does. “ they have better things to do than fix my fridge. ”
“sorry what?” she coughed as she swallowed her coffee. “i can have my it guy take a look.”
“ ah, i’m sure that’s not necessary. i can’t imagine it’ll take longer than thirty seconds. if only i knew how! ” she turns to elyse. “ you’re young, you might be able to figure it out. ”
He side stepped the forming crowd as the stomping started off again. He wasn’t quite sure if the lack of alcohol or his mood was making him look at the whole thing - something many would likely pin as his scene - with suspicion. The wedding reception in general felt too bright, formal and visible of a space to be in the middle of a kissing flash mob. “It’s… a little cult-y right? It feels a little cult-y.” he commented to the soul that had ended next to him by the bar in their escape.
“ tradition, petro. it’s a tradition. ” a curious gaze studies his features, unable to ascertain whether he’s sounding uncultured on purpose. “ you aren’t intending to participate in the points game this time, are you? ” she’s surprised, mostly pleased, that he isn’t taking this opportunity to kiss people left and right, but she would still like his confirmation.
