June Cometh... just not fast enough

Why is it not June yet?  I am absolutely ready for graduation.  Past ready.  I have a job I am really excited about lined up, I just need the degree.  I know these things are closely linked, but I am having a motivation problem.  It could be that I am simultaneously in two groups working on three projects all with major deadlines this weekend.  Or it could just be that the end is approaching and I am giddy with anticipation.

Can you imagine?  No more paying someone to torture me with work!  After graduation *I* get to be paid for work related torture!  Bliss.....

Why did I decide to teach myself Japanese.  This couldn’t possibly end badly.  Here’s hoping I don’t quit on it.  It is something I’ve wanted to accomplish for years, almost two decades, so perhaps it will stick.

Plans to visit Japan in the next five years.  Gotta get it done by then.  ;)

Making Friends - The Adult Experience

Living three and a half hours away from home for a summer internship at the ripe old age of 33 has taught me something about myself that I never really realized.  

I have no idea how to make friends with people.

Unless we share common interests, of course.  You have a common interest and BAM you talk about that and get to know them, suuuuper easy.  Nothing in common, and... Hmmmmm...

One might assume that having nothing in common means you can’t be friends, this is not true.  Having common interests makes it EASY to be friends, and frankly a little boring at times.  Meeting someone who has nothing in common with you and investigating a friendship is HARD, but sometimes quite a bit more satisfying.

I mention this because I have found such a person.  We have very little in common, but we’re both friendly and I find this really wonderful.  Here’s this chance I have to learn about new hobbies I would otherwise never be exposed to and I think I should take it.

It does lead to odd conversations where we both attempt to bridge the common interest gap with phrases like “Yeah, I should read more...” and “I haven’t tried that since I was a kid, I should give it a shot...”

It makes me wonder if I am the only one of us two finding it interesting to make a friend with someone so different.  If I am, then I really hope I’m not being super annoying with all my questions.  :D

Traveling to a family gathering while battling another spring cold is misery. I've made myself largely presentable by subsisting on cold medicine. Admittedly, it's a handy excuse to hang out in the background of crowded family gatherings.

and when i first saw it i was like “aww Nat jumping into steve’s lap that’s so cute she’s like AHH STEVE SAVE ME” and then i was thinking ‘well she probably realized he’s way stronger than she is and could help shield her if they crashed’

but then i kept watching it and i noticed how she immediately pulls him forward 

and first i thought it was the momentum of her jump but you can clearly see in the gif how she gets settled (quickly) THEN pulls him close to her

and then i realized

that is a bullet hole. 

Nat somehow knew EXACTLY where Steve was gonna get shot at, jumped up into his seat, and saved him

The "Food Babe" Blogger Is Full of Shit

Vani Hari, AKA the Food Babe, has amassed a loyal following in her Food Babe Army. The recent subject of profiles and interviews in the New York Times, the New York Post and New York Magazine, Hari implores her soldiers to petition food companies to change their formulas. She’s also written a bestselling book telling you that you can change your life in 21 days by “breaking free of the hidden toxins in your life.” She and her army are out to change the world.

  She’s also utterly full of shit. 

  I am an analytical chemist with a background in forensics and toxicology. Before working full-time as a science writer and public speaker, I worked as a chemistry professor, a toxicology chemist, and in research analyzing pesticides for safety. I now run my own blog, Science Babe, dedicated to debunking pseudoscience that tends to proliferate in the blogosphere. Reading Hari’s site, it’s rare to come across a single scientific fact. Between her egregious abuse of the word “toxin” anytime there’s a chemical she can’t pronounce and asserting that everyone who disagrees with her is a paid shill, it’s hard to pinpoint her biggest sin.

Me:  “It could sit out on that desk in the hallway just waiting for my occasional visits.  :D”

The quiet before the storm

This lull I am experiencing, the one where I am actually completely done with all school related work, I should not get used to it. I suspect this time next month I will be beyond stressed and tearing my hair out.  Experiments will be failing, midterms will be looming, programs will be buggy, and employers will not be calling.

But for now.... I think I’ll relax, sit back, and play some videya games.

Dentist to assistant:  “Can you hand me the hatchet?” Me (with a mouth full of pointy things): “!?!!?!!” Dentist to me: “It’s not as bad as it sounds, but this filling is really annoying me.”

Writing Reports

I never really thought that chemical engineering would be boring, but... Reports.  Why.

I am not at all certain what possessed me to volunteer to be the first person of my lab group to write the planning report.  It is literally the first item that will be graded in my Unit Ops class.  Probably should have tried to wrangle the oral presentation portion of the experiment, but I thought that would be a transparent bid to do the easiest of our three options.

I did calculate that the given experiment is simple enough and the fact that it is the first graded item should weigh in my favor.  Does not make this any easier.

I feel like I am repeating myself in this damned report.  I suspect that might be intended, since some scientific papers are written in a kind of redundant manner.  It just bothers my brain to be repeatedly saying the same (or similar!) things over and over.  How many people really need me to explain that we will take a full set of measurements?  Isn’t it kind of implied?

At least my group members are smart guys.  Maybe they can carry me through any thermodynamic calculations...
