Natasha Romanoff + every MCU appearance ⪠#2 - The Avengers (2012)
For so long, all I wanted was for you to love me. To accept me. I thought it was my honor that I wanted, but really, I was just trying to please you. You, my father, who banished me just for talking out of turn. My father, who challenged me, a thirteen-year-old boy to an Agni Kai. How can you possibly justify a duel with a child?Â
It was to teach you respect. It was cruel and it was wrong! Then youâve learned nothing. No, Iâve learned everything! And Iâve had to learn it on my own. Growing up, we were taught that the Fire Nation was the greatest civilization in history, and somehow the war was our way of sharing our greatness with the rest of the world. What an amazing lie that was. The people of the world are terrified by the Fire Nation. They donât see our greatness, they hate us! And we deserve it. Weâve created an era of fear in the world, and if we donât want the world to destroy itself, we need to replace it with an era of peace, and kindness.Â
Your uncle has gotten to you, hasnât he? Yes, he has. After I leave here today, Iâm gonna free Uncle Iroh from his prison, and Iâm gonna beg for his forgiveness. Heâs the one whoâs been a real father to me. But Iâve come to an even more important decision. Iâm going to join The Avatar, and Iâm going to help him defeat you. I know my own destiny. Taking you down is The Avatarâs destiny. Goodbye.

âI tell people my sister moved out west. Youâre a science teacher. Your husband, he renovates houses. Youâre thinking about moving but youâre gonna wait until the interest rates go down.â
Mass incarceration has always been a tool for white supremacy and maintaining political control.
Same thing for anyone still fighting against decriminalizing marijuana.
Itâs the same group people who are pushing these laws.
Prison gerrymandering has always about systemic structural racism.

Youâre a total poser
Black Widow #8 (2014) // Black Widow (2020)
natasha staring at her reflection is such a powerful shot to open the trailer with, though. itâs significant to her story, especially in this film. self-reflection. looking back at yourself and your actions, your past. judging that in the harshest way. notice her bare, beaten down look (and the way they cut that scene with her vision from aou). sheâs really in a bad place. self-doubt. shame. disappointment. regret. and those arenât my words, but SJâs.
âIâm done running from my past.â
sheâll be coming face to face with the trauma of her past, her fears. and natashaâs greatest fear has always been herself; the person she thinks she is, the person whose sins cannot be absolved by doing good, the person who is only bad. (the deleted endgame scene with her fear being another version of herself? yes).
she doesnât resent the person she is now, she never has. she took what they made her into, but chose the path she wanted to take. helping people, saving lives, protecting the innocent. she knows thatâs who she is now, but she doesnât see herself as a âheroâ. to her, the bad sheâs done will always outweigh the good. part of why she thought she was the obvious choice in endgame, and sadly, that choice of hers was very in character (regardless of the way it was written).
but whatever happens in this movie, it ends in self-forgiveness. in acceptance. this may be a prequel to endgame, but it feels more cathartic, healing. it feels like finally, weâre getting a clear look at natasha, her thoughts, her feelings, her fucking movie. black widow and cate shortland is doing what endgame and the russos never could; giving us closure.Â
theyâre putting her story to rest. and you know what? iâm ready.
YES THIS GOOD
But can I add:
Natasha at a mirror means that itâs not Natasha performing for anyone else. This isnât the Natasha that Steve needs, or Clint, or Tony. She may be exhausted, beaten-down, on the run, but sheâs not there to be on display. This is Natasha as Natasha sees herself, and with the arguable exception of the vision in AoU, weâve never gotten that before.
âIâm done running from my past.â
Black Widow (2020) || Dr. Cate Shortland
if youâre reading this, itâs a sign that the thing youâre anxious about will go well. take a deep breath and trust yourself.
Whatâs encrypting your internet surfing? An algorithm created by a supercomputer? Well, if the site youâre visiting is encrypted by the cyber security firm Cloudflare, your activity may be protected by a wall of lava lamps.
Cloudflare covers websites for Uber, OKCupid, & FitBit, for instance. The wall of lamps in the San Francisco headquarters generates a random code. Over 100 lamps, in a variety of colors, and their patterns deter hackers from accessing data. Â
As the lava lamps bubble and swirl, a video camera on the ceiling monitors their unpredictable changes and connects the footage to a computer, which converts the randomness into a virtually unhackable code.
Codes created by machines have relatively predictable patterns, so itâs possible for hackers to guess their algorithms, posing a security risk. Lava lamps, add to the equation the sheer randomness of the physical world, making it nearly impossible for hackers to break through.
You might think that this would be kept secret, but itâs not. Simply go in and ask to see the lava lamp display. By allowing people to affect the video footage, human movement, static, and changes in lighting from the windows work together to make the random code even harder to predict.
So, by standing in front of the display, you add an additional variable to the code, making it even harder to hack. Isnât that interesting?Â
