Moonwalk  One.  A  beloved  Terran  film  documenting  the  first  time  humans  landed  on  the  moon,  detailing  every  bit  of  the  technological  advancements  that  had  made  it  possible  and  capturing  the  collective  emotion  of  the  planet  alongside  it;  he  had  seen  this  film  several  times,  noting  that  it  was  a  favorite  amongst  many  during  Spock’s  own  time  in  the  Academy,  and  this  staple  in  their  culture  remained  consistent.  There  were  many  gathered  in  the  mess  hall  to  observe  the  film,  replicating  buckets  of  overly-buttered  popcorn  that  he  had  no  real  taste  for.  The  film  did  not  strike  him  as  deeply  as  it  might  have  the  others;  it  was  half  his  history,  sure,  but  it  was  the  half  of  his  identity  he  didn’t  nurture  as  often.  

Spock  wavered  in  the  back  of  the  room,  standing  near  a  replicator  and  prompting  it  to  make  him  his  preferred  spice  tea.  The  programming  never  made  it  quite  right,  but  it  was  the  closest  approximation  he  had,  and  it  would  simply  have  to  do.  

“Lieutenant  Donovan,”  Spock  started,  removing  his  mug  from  the  replicator  and  curling  his  fingers  around  it;  there  was  another  reason  —  to  leech  the  heat  from  the  beverage,  and  accommodate  for  the  fact  that  the  temperature  controls  throughout  the  ship  were  always  a  bit  too  low  for  his  tastes.  “Will  you  be  observing  the  movie  with  the  rest  of  the  crew  this  evening?”

Spock  was  entirely  uncertain  what  sequence  of  events  had  unravelled  and  led  him  here,  to  this  particular  moment.  Seemingly  trapped  in  the  Captain’s  quarters  for  the  evening  as  Kirk  projected  holo  after  holo,  determined  to  get  through  Reba  McEntire’s  entire  musical  videography  with  a  thorough  explanation  accompanying  each  clip.  The  Vulcan  was  being  inundated  with  a  barrage  of  history  regarding  human  linguistics  and  slang,  as  well  as  the  cultural  significance  of  the  Terran  country  musician.  He  was  simply  at  a  loss  for  words  as  Jim  belted  the  lyrics  of  What  If  It’s  You  with  an  impressive  disregard  for the key the song was in.  

“I  do  not  understand  why  she  does  not  simply  inform  her  lover  of  her  affections,  if  the  prospect  of  him  taking  on  another  lover  is  this  distressing  to  her. Would it not be more effective to tell him directly instead of crafting vague lyricism?”
