Well yeah, for the most part that’s what beauty standards are for, but there’s obviously a social benefit to looking good in general even as a celibate, anyone denying this is coping, looks matter, there was some controversy over this recently on bp tumblr, but in my opinion— humans have always cared about aesthetics and they have always known the importance of visual impact. If aesthetics and presentation didn’t matter entire industries focused on branding would crumble, architecture, interior design, fashion, art—all rendered meaningless. Look back at history and see how much effort, energy and attention was dedicated into armour, flags, banners, do you think artisans would’ve poured so much time into those intricate details that added nothing to the combat ability of a warrior? They knew the impact of looking intimidating to the enemy. Presentation matters psychologically, and aesthetics dominate propaganda and motivation across history and cultures. To willingly ignore how central aesthetics are to human psychology is pointless. Even morality is dictated by aesthetics—which is why we feel worse about killing a butterfly than killing a spider, or eating a pig rather than a cat. Presentation matters, it’s absurd but it’s also a core aspect of humanity, and I won’t judge women who put on some concealer, mascara, takes care of her hair— if that helps her ascend in her career by taking advantage of the halo effect (which men are also starting to do, so what is this controversy even about?). If that’s not your goal and you don’t wish to participate in society like that—that’s also valid and you don’t have to looksmaxx, it’s just a strategy used by some, I don’t use it either because I don’t need it at the moment. I also want to mention that looking good does not have to mean you sacrifice personal style and dignity, a woman can look good and respectable without being feminine at all. This is just my pragmatic take on the matter.
