Nikolai scoffed at her, shaking his head. “Please,” he said, “What do you want me to do? Tell her to make sure she leaves my ex alone?” Nikolai shrugged, “I didn’t even know you were in town until today.” He inhaled sharply, a look of increasing annoyance enveloping his face as Katarina went on her miniature rant about why they were broken up. “Did I not ask you to move with me?” He asked, raising a brow at her, “See the world? We could’ve never done that when I first started. Now? Yeah, now things are different. We could’ve seen Brooklyn with the amount of money I had back then. Playing piano only took me so far.”
“No, of course not. It is however mildly concerning behavior that I want you to be aware of though. I also want you aware of the fact that next time she won’t leave without a scratch. I hate being fucked with. You know all about that don’t you though? You are, after all, the expect at fucking with me.” She scoffed as he spoke, shaking her head at him, “You knew I couldn’t go with you.” Kat shook her head, tucking her hair behind her ear, “We could have made it work, it was hard but life is hard Nik. So what? You gave up on your dreams so I should have given up on mine? Is that what you’re saying? Nikolai, I never would have been happy settling down. I don’t even know if I’m happy settling down now. Stop though, stop with the excuses, it’s always excuses.” She pressed her hands to her head, squeezing her eyes shut, “Why are we doing this? It didn’t accomplish anything in the past and it won’t now. We need to be, what is the word? Cortés?” She looked at him, almost expecting him to translate for her, “educado? Necesitamos ser civiles. We need to be civil, um, polite, courteous”
