thank u so much!! this is such a sweet request, hope you enjoy this dana fluff 🤍
imagine dana taking you out post shift. you're a newbie nurse, fresh into the job maybe four months ago. dana took you under her wing without a second thought, mentoring you, looking out for you. you're new to all of this, to the blood, tears, death. it's a lot, sometimes too much and dana can see it in your eyes from a mile away.
the two of you had gotten close. dana would drive you home most nights, saying she wouldn't want her best girl walking in the dark. she'd bring you lunch, scold robby if he even so much as raised his voice at you. there was something about you that needed looking after and dana wanted to be the one to do it.
"come on, hon" she says, slinging her arm over your shoulder. you're just about ready to leave, jacket on and bag at your feet.
the day's been shitty, really shitty. you've had tears in your eyes for most it, swallowing so hard to try and rid the lump in your throat with no such luck.
"let's get some dinner" you don't have a choice in the matter. not that you want one. dana knows you probably wouldn't eat otherwise, you're young, not great in the kitchen and even worse at making sure the refrigerator is stocked in your studio apartment.
you nod, shyly, picking up your bag to be led out of the automatic doors.
dana takes you to the diner two blocks down from the hospital. it's old fashioned, not really a diner at all since it's mainly known for it's shakes and pancakes. the decor's all pink with elvis littered on every wall. dana likes it because they have a jukebox attached to each booth. she thought you'd like it too.
you look at the menu for far too long, unable to make your mind up. dana takes the reins, "how about breakfast for dinner huh?" smiling at you, eyes warm and soft.
you nod. "maybe a milkshake?"
her eyes light up at your request. "sure thing, doll"
the food comes and it's delicious. you watch dana douse her pancakes in syrup, laughing at her with a mouthful when she continues to add more to every bite. you didn't know she had such a sweet tooth. you don't know the half of it.
your waffles are just as good. covered in strawberry and banana, you're a little more reserved with your sugar, drizzling just a dash to which dana tips the jug with her fingers, causing a glug of syrup to fall over your food. you slap her wrist away in jest, calling her a bad influence.
the pair of you share a vanilla milkshake. tall and topped with whipped cream, a perfectly red cherry placed at the peak. two straws poke out either side and dana edges the glass towards you, urging you to have the first sip. when you lean in, she pushes the glass even more so your nose ends up covered in white.
"dana!" you squeal, mouth half full.
she laughs at you, more so she laughs at you. but not at your expense, it's how you're smiling, how your waterline isn't pooled with tears anymore. you look bright and happy. that's her favourite look on you.
she asks if you have room for dessert. you seem hesitant but she knows it's out of politeness. she choose the most indulgent looking brownie, fudgy and warm, a serving of ice cream on the side. you dig in together, spoons clinking, dana jokingly fighting you for the last mouthful yet you know she's going to let you have it. she does.
your breath hitches when she leans over, thumb wiping at the corner of your lip, "saving that for later?" rubbing away the remnants of chocolate, you can't help but smile.
the way she looks at you is something you've never felt. never known. like she'll never let anything bad happen, you feel protected and safe, even when somewhere silly like the local shake bar. she likes you. really likes you. and you really like her.
"ever seen one of these?" her voice pulls you from thought.
"huh?" you shake your head when you see her tapping on the jukebox at the end of the table. "oh, no"
dana laughs. "course you haven't. sweet girl" she fishes into her purse, pulling out her wallet and then a few quarters. "pick a song" she says, slotting a coin into the machine.
"uhhh—" you scan the songs, not knowing half of them but you don't tell dana that. "that one. B15" you point against the glass.
dana types in the combination, watching your eyes follow the jukebox working its magic. the song starts, just for the two of you to hear.
dana's eyes close at the music, just for a split second. you melt into your chair, feeling both full and content. it's a nice feeling.
And the moon is the only light we'll see
she leans forward to move the empty plates and glasses aside, hand stretching out across the table top. your fingers reach out to dance across her palm before the two of you end holding hands, fingers intertwined.
Just as long as you stand, stand by me <3
