Emma has never been in a real, adult relationship before.
Dana hasn’t been with someone other than Benji in almost 30 years.
So much of this is new to both of them, and there are up and downs to that. But they’re enjoying the newness too—that shivery joy that comes with each new step in their relationship.

But Dana seems to squirm every time it comes up in conversation —even if just about someone else they know. Almost as if she knows that once the topic is opened, it can never be put back in the box. So, Emma hasn’t said it outright just yet, respecting that. But it’s starting to itch inside her. She’s scared Dana might be ashamed of her somehow. Or consider her too much of a kid to ever consider an equal in that way.
Dana, meanwhile, is dealing with insecurity. This woman is 23years old! She shouldn’t tie herself down to Dana! Sure, they dream of forever but what about in ten-fifteen years when Dana is getting close to 70, and Emma, meanwhile, is approaching the end of her biological clock? Can Dana really let Emma waste her family-building years on a woman who can’t give her a baby OR more than a decade or two?
And so both of them avoid the conversation…

Look, Dana is almost 60 years old!
…If you read that first sentence and thought that meant she’s falling asleep fast, you’re still young 😂 Look, sleep changes when you’re old. Your body can’t stay in one position so long without hurting, you have to pee, every light and sound seems to keep you from that sweet escape. Dana practices sleep hygiene now! She has a face mask, and comfy earplugs, and magnesium pills and STILL it takes her a solid hour or two to settle.
Emma meanwhile… out like a light. Literally, she once fell asleep with Dana’s strap still inside her. STILL VIBRATING.
