Here are some fun ideas for you to play with.   Петриківка or Petrykivka painting is a traditional painting style in Ukraine.  On the Facebook page Цікава Петриківка you can see lots of examples of their work.  This could also be used in embroidery using the shading techniques we’ve been posting about lately.  As you can see - many elements are fairly simple and do not have a ton of different colors in them.  So even if you’re not a great artist - like me - you can trace some of these examples and try out various color combinations.  That’s what this type of painting is all about - lots and lots of color!  So give it a try and see what neat combinations you can come up with.

I finished the sleeve embroidery over the weekend! Here’s the finished product!

Challah! I love working with yeast.

First time using the 6 strand braid and I think it turned out pretty good!

I’d never made challah before so I researched some recipes online and used those to smoosh together this recipe, and I’m overall happy with it:

2.5 cups warm water

1 tbls active dry yeast

3/4 cup honey

3 tbls vegetable oil

1 whole egg + 3 egg yolks

1 tbls salt

7 cups bread flour, plus one cup to work in when kneading

I let it rise for just under 2 hours, punched it down, braided two loaves, and let that rise a bit over one hour.

I topped them with an egg wash and poppy seeds and baked for 35 minutes at 375 F

It came out really sweet and soft with a crunch crust. May try again with all purpose flour to see how it affects the crumb. I think it may be better with AP than the bread flour, but this batch was still pretty good!

Since the arctic decided to migrate south for winter this year, I’ve been cooped up inside, avoiding frostbite, and have passed time by embroidering an old t shirt.

I’ve never embroidered before so it’s kind of just a palate for me trying out different stitches. Still a work in progress. Also, please ignore that one ugly pink flower. I don’t know what I’m doing yet lol

Fucked around and made an orange meringue pie with a layer of mixed berry jam? I just had too many eggs and too many oranges and also I love making jam so I figured why not? It was pretty good for a recipe I pulled out of my ass

I didn’t wait for it to cool completely after the final bake which is why the jam is so runny. I’m just an impatient idiot! It could have been pretty! But it was delicious.
