Killing Sticks

So light me up another one and burn

my aching lungs. It hurt to breathe before

you left and will torture me as I yearn

for those nights in ruin behind closed doors.

Numb fingers clasp mindlessly for flame

that flickers just behind blue eyes as tears

threaten to fall. Beneath the smoke hides shame

and grief for innocence lost in past years.

As ashes fall around my feet and cling

to my hair, it reminds me how I love the cold

and the scorching of my throat. Colouring

the sky lilac and grey, rumours unfold.

When the smoke clears, my lungs begin to cool,

though I don’t want to breathe again – young fool.
