Kate Kelly Racist Chant

As an update to last nights post about the appropriative chant, the video of the sunstone session has been released. It can be watched here and the relevant remarks begin at 47 minutes. 

She began with some very TERF worthy “The future is female”

Abuse of Power and Position, The Laptop

In early 2015 Kate Kelly used gofundme to raise money for a new laptop. The original campaign has been taken down, however the internet is forever and an archived copy can still be viewed. A News article about this can be read Here.  This campaign bothered people for a variety of reasons. Kate Kelly appears to be a woman of means, she flies back and forth between the US and Kenya often, had a well established career as a lawyer, yet turned to asking for money when she needed a new computer claiming that she didn’t have the funds to purchase it herself. Perhaps this is true, but given her position of respect and power within the online Mormon feminist community it did seem like an exploitation of her power.

When called out on this, KK responded with “THE WHOLE FUCKING POINT OF THIS IS THAT I GOT A LAPTOP, MOTHERFUCKERS”  

Kate Kelly has never responded well to criticism, and the use of “motherfuckers” does not win her any feminist points.  Relevent reddit threads here and also here. Both of those links contain more discussion as to why this behavior was poopy.

Meet The Ex-Mormons, Sunstone 2015.

On August 1st, 2015 Kate Kelly spoke on a panel at the Sunstone conference in Salt Lake City titled “Meet the Ex-Mormons.” Several attendees have reported that during this panel she asked “all female-identified persons in the room” to stand (explanation for why that is a problematic term) and repeat after her. Allegedly the phrases she chose to have the attendees repeat (it’s noteworthy that the majority of attendees at this event were white) included “We must love each-other and support each-other; we have nothing to lose but our chains” The allegation here is that KK appropriated these words from another movement that is not hers. This chant originates from Assata Shakur and can be seen here. As a white woman leading other white women, this chant had absolutely no place being repeated at Sunstone. The original chant has been used frequently in regards to police violence, especially Ferguson and Baltimore.
