Selected Works from Anna Elizabeth Klumpke
Anna Elizabeth Klumpke was an American portrait and genre painter. She was disabled from a young age. Anna received a doll based on Rosa Bonheur. She was inspired by Bonheur and would later be known for her portraits of famous women—including Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Rosa Bonheur herself. The two met when Anna was 43 and eventually moved in together. Rosa created a studio for her, and in return, Anna painted three portraits of Rosa and wrote her biography. Their relationship continued until Rosa Bonheur died in 1899; Anna was the sole heir to Rosa’s estate.
The biography doesn’t mention explicitly if the two were lovers. However, it does mention that after the first portrait was finished, Rosa Bonheur admitted her feelings toward Anna. She said: “Friendship of the soul may become a divine affection; it is superior to family relations, and such friendship will last beyond our earthly existence.”
You can find these works, and a selection of Rosa Bonheur’s, in our gallery!
