EXHIBITION: HUNTERS ON THE HUNT

‘Hunting in the 16th century represented the ultimate pleasure of the country gentleman: the Château de Kerjean and its estate are the ideal surroundings in which to evoke such a theme. This exhibition explains, thanks to the old objects and animated films on display, the subtleties and diversities of hunting techniques of that era. Contemporary works, displayed alongside the universe of hunting, provide a poetic, and at times, humorous, if somewhat offbeat perspective. This mixing of genres allows the exhibition to offer a mischievous portrayal of a practice that still gives rise to numerous debates today.’

Venice Biennale

In the work of British sculptor Kate MccGwire, feathers are used in meticulous constructions, creating tactile, alluring and disquieting works. Alongside 50 renowned artists from over 20 countries, MccGwire has been invited to join the ranks of the prestigious Glasstress 2015 Gotika at the 56th Venice Biennale.

In collaboration with the Berengo Glass Studio, MccGwire has sculpted a large-scale floor installation sculpture using Berengo black glass and crow feathers. The work, entitled SIREN, is an unsettling and extraordinary work. Crows are traditionally thought to be a bad omen, reflecting the gothic theme of the show, inviting is an exploration of the effect that Gothic and medieval ideas have had on the modern conscience and contemporary art. The work will be unveiled on the 8th of May.

Berengo Studio focuses on bringing renowned visual artists to Venice to collaborate with Murano’s historic glass artisans. Masters of their craft for centuries, the Venetian glass history has been one of tradition with unparalleled skill. Now, Berengo Studio, under the guidance of Adriano Berengo, have been innovating the extraordinarily rich and enduring Venetian traditions of glassmaking by reinventing the work with contemporary art. Glasstress is the result of this visionary cultural initiative.

Glasstress 2015 Gotika combines historical medieval glass and objects from the Hermitage’s collection that have rarely if ever been seen by the public and contemporary art works created in glass by internationally renowned artists who were invited by the curators to work with the glass masters in the furnaces of Murano. The artists, who are from over 20 countries, were asked to respond to the gothic concept in their creations in glass. Glisters will be exhibited at the historic Palazzo Franchetti on the Grand Canal and in an old glass furnace on Murano, home of the permanent exhibition space of the Fondazione Berengo.

In 2016, the work will be presented in the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg in the company of Russia’s greatest treasures in glass.

Peter Randall-Page and Kate MccGwire

‘Two internationally renowned British artists, Peter Randall-Page RWA and Kate MccGwire, have been brought together for this striking exhibition as part of the RWA’s environmental theme for Bristol’s year as European Green Capital. Featuring two-and three-dimensional work, both artists explore natural phenomena, patterns and repetition, utilising natural or found materials within which to reflect the rhythms of nature.

MccGwire’s work hints at something hidden or lying dormant beneath the surface, concealed by luminescent coats of feathers, each one donated or collected and meticulously preserved. Her writhing, serpentine sculptures – such as the monumental Gyre – are at once both compelling and repelling, beautiful and grotesque.

Although Randall-Page’s work draws on a broad frame of reference from geology, biology and morphology to mathematics, music, pattern and variation, his primary concern is with our subjective, emotional response to shape and form. His recent large-scale ink drawings create watery tributaries across the wall, rich russet-red and black ink splaying outwards like the branches of a tree, river deltas or vascular and neural networks.’

Peter Randall-Page has exhibited widely including major solo shows at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and most recently at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and Plymouth University, 2014. He has undertaken numerous large-scale commissions in England and abroad and his work is held in public and private collections including Japan, South Korea, Australia, USA, Turkey, Eire, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. His public sculptures can be found in London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Oxford, Cambridge and Bristol. He was elected an RWA in 1993.

Kate MccGwire was recently selected for the 2015 Venice Biennale and has previously shown at Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature and Museum National d’histoire Naturelle, Paris; Galerie Particulière, Brussels; MoMu, Antwerp; Norwich Castle Museum; The Royal Academy, London; Shenghua Art Centre, China; and numerous other unusual site-specific venues including the National Trust properties Tatton Park, Felbrigg Hall, and Attingham Park. She has completed residencies in China and New York and studied at the Royal College of Art.
