the manâs gaze lifted from the soft features of the newborn in his arms and focused on those of his wife, and he lifted an eyebrow as he smiled. âyou might be a little biased there, but i canât disagree with you. they are pretty freaking cute.â he readjusted a bit in his chair so he could have a better view of his wife holding the other newborn. it was so strange, it was as if each time he saw the scene it was the first time he saw it. each time, a knot formed in his throat, and this almost unbearable urge to cry made his arms fill with goosebumps. but instead of crying, he cleared his throat and gave the brunette a soft smile. âblue,â he mumbled as he pointed at the baby in his arms, âgreen,â he added, pointing to asher. âgot it.â he sighed. âi think felix looks a bit more like you. asher looks a lot like how emma looked when she was born. i think she wouldâve loved to be a big sister. or maybe she wouldâve bee super jealous. who knows? with two baby brothers, itâs kinda hard to tell.â he stopped his own thoughts with another sigh. âbut yeah, i think felix has some of your features. iâd know - i do enjoy looking at your face as often as possible, i can comfortably say i have it memorized.â sam added with a smile.
sam let out a chuckle at his wifeâs compliment, unable to think of what to say in reponse. âthank you, baby.â he didnât want to doubt her, but he couldnât help but wonder how long itâd be until he made a mistake he wouldnât be able to fix. it was an overwhelming feeling, wanting - no - needing to protect his family yet not having control over every possible situation. well, this would probably just have to be something he discussed with his therapist next time he saw him. âi have no idea what weâll do when they start crying at the same time,â he chuckled lightly. âbut hey, i do have some experience with babies. it is why you accepted resume, isnât it? for the baby daddy position.â he smiled a bit wider at his own silly joke. âiâm here to help you figure this out. seeing you with them, like this, iâm sure itâll come naturally to you. i can see it, you have that⊠what would you call it? this⊠unconditional love built in.â that was true. after everything, all the time theyâd been apart and how she still loved him as much as she did⊠it was obvious their children wouldnât be lacking any of their motherâs affection. as he held his wifeâs hand, and she kept on telling him sweet words, he kissed the back of it a couple more times before he looked up at her. âcome on kate, itâs the absolute least i could do, after having you carry both of these chunksters. how did they even fit in there? i canât imagine how that felt. youâre incredible.â still holding her hand, he rubbed the side of his face on the back of her hand, beard and everything. âdo you need anything? i think if i canât help, the nurse definitely can. since, you know, sheâs actually qualified.â sam added, refusing to break physical contact with his wife, now resting his cheek on her hand.
Asher and Felix were so precious and Kate still couldnât believe that they were finally here. She had waited so long to become a mother and she was so happy. Happier than she had ever been in her entire life. âItâll be interesting to see who they take after as they get older.â Kate hoped they were mini clones of Sam. She loved her husband so much and wanted that for him. She couldnât imagine what it was like losing a child, and she was proud of him for how well he seemed to be holding it together right now. This was the happiness he needed. They both needed it. At the mention of Emma, she nodded her head. âWell, we can take them to see Emma. We can make a tradition out of it,â she suggested. âI guess youâre right, he kind of does have my nose,â she said, studying Felixâs little face a bit closer. âIf anyone knows my face best itâs definitely you.âÂ
âIâm sure it wonât be too long until I starter to feel slightly overwhelmed, but I know youâre right here no matter what,â Sam was always reassuring, unlike her ex-husband. He was never there for her when she needed him. Kate felt like she was meant to be a mother, but of course she was still second guessing herself and she was sure she would continue to do so. âExactly, thatâs the whole reason we got back together. I needed a baby daddy,â she teased, letting out a laugh. âThey just melt my heart every time I look at them,â she said before kissing the tiny baby on the head once again. âI never would have thought us reuniting at that library would ever lead to this. Iâm so glad it did,â Sam was the love of her life and being able to have two perfect children with him was a dream come true. She felt so lucky. âTo answer the question, Iâm really not sure how they did. I wonât lie, I was pretty miserable the last few weeks.â All she had really done was lie around. âNo, I think Iâm just fine for now. I wonât say no to some McDonaldâs in a little bit, though. A McDouble and a large fry sounds amazing.âÂ
