Becoming a mom was such a wonderful and surreal experience for Kate. She never thought she would ever get the chance to become a mother, and as she got into her thirties she had sadly accepted the fact that it would never happen for her. However, Sam coming back into her life changed all of that and now here she was with the best husband and sweetest newborn twin boys. They were so perfect, and she couldnât stop staring at them. Asher and Felix were so loved and so wanted. Looking at them, she felt a feeling she had never felt before. A love she had never felt before that was completely different from any other kind of love.Â
The difficult and exhausting birth had been completely worth it. The boys were healthy and didnât need to spend time in the NICU, so Kate was counting her blessings. In a couple of days, their little family would be able to go home. Sam, of course, was already a perfect father to the twins and she nearly broke down into happy tears each time she saw him holding or interacting with their boys in the thirty minutes or so that they had been born. Their families hadnât yet been back to see them, and Kate was happy about that. It was nice having the private time until their mothers came in and took the boys. They definitely would. They had been waiting on Sam and Kate to get married and have children for decades. âThey really are. Sorry to everyone else, but our babies are the cutest babies ever, and theyâre so goodâŚeven though theyâve only been here for less than an hour,â she said before pressing a soft kiss to Asherâs tiny head. âAsherâs nose is a little bit different from Felixâs, I think thatâs our best bet in telling them apart right now. Weâll keep him in green for now and Felix can wear blue,â she said, planning the onesies they would wear first once they were ready to be put in them.Â
âYouâre such a great dad to them already, I had no doubt in my mind about that,â she said, shifting Asher for the picture. âIâm sure theyâll start fussing in no time, theyâll get hungry or need to poop.â Kate was pretty nervous about figuring out breastfeeding. She hoped she would be able to do it and that it wouldnât be too difficult. It was slightly stressing her out. Looking at Sam, she reached over and took his free hand into hers. âI feel fine right now, that will probably change later once the epidural wears off,â she said, knowing sheâd be sore in a couple hours or so. She just had two babies. âI love you so much, Sam. I couldnât have gotten through this without your support the whole time. Iâm a lucky lady to have such a great husband.âÂ
.
the manâs gaze lifted from the soft features of the newborn in his arms and focused on those of his wife, and he lifted an eyebrow as he smiled. âyou might be a little biased there, but i canât disagree with you. they are pretty freaking cute.â he readjusted a bit in his chair so he could have a better view of his wife holding the other newborn. it was so strange, it was as if each time he saw the scene it was the first time he saw it. each time, a knot formed in his throat, and this almost unbearable urge to cry made his arms fill with goosebumps. but instead of crying, he cleared his throat and gave the brunette a soft smile. âblue,â he mumbled as he pointed at the baby in his arms, âgreen,â he added, pointing to asher. âgot it.â he sighed. âi think felix looks a bit more like you. asher looks a lot like how emma looked when she was born. i think she wouldâve loved to be a big sister. or maybe she wouldâve bee super jealous. who knows? with two baby brothers, itâs kinda hard to tell.â he stopped his own thoughts with another sigh. âbut yeah, i think felix has some of your features. iâd know - i do enjoy looking at your face as often as possible, i can comfortably say i have it memorized.â sam added with a smile.
sam let out a chuckle at his wifeâs compliment, unable to think of what to say in reponse. âthank you, baby.â he didnât want to doubt her, but he couldnât help but wonder how long itâd be until he made a mistake he wouldnât be able to fix. it was an overwhelming feeling, wanting - no - needing to protect his family yet not having control over every possible situation. well, this would probably just have to be something he discussed with his therapist next time he saw him. âi have no idea what weâll do when they start crying at the same time,â he chuckled lightly. âbut hey, i do have some experience with babies. it is why you accepted resume, isnât it? for the baby daddy position.â he smiled a bit wider at his own silly joke. âiâm here to help you figure this out. seeing you with them, like this, iâm sure itâll come naturally to you. i can see it, you have that... what would you call it? this... unconditional love built in.â that was true. after everything, all the time theyâd been apart and how she still loved him as much as she did... it was obvious their children wouldnât be lacking any of their motherâs affection. as he held his wifeâs hand, and she kept on telling him sweet words, he kissed the back of it a couple more times before he looked up at her. âcome on kate, itâs the absolute least i could do, after having you carry both of these chunksters. how did they even fit in there? i canât imagine how that felt. youâre incredible.â still holding her hand, he rubbed the side of his face on the back of her hand, beard and everything. âdo you need anything? i think if i canât help, the nurse definitely can. since, you know, sheâs actually qualified.â sam added, refusing to break physical contact with his wife, now resting his cheek on her hand.

Where: Hospital
For Kate, the last several hours of difficult labor were completely worth it as she was holding her and Samâs newborn sons. It felt so surreal, sitting there holding Asher and Felix. The children she had wanted for so long were finally here. For as long as she could remember, she always wanted to be a mom and now Sam, the love of her life, made that dream come true. She appreciated him so much, especially after the last thirty hours or so. He had been right by her side letting her squeeze his hand as long as she needed to. She was well aware of the fact this was probably a strange experience for him considering he had lost a child. She was excited to see him be an amazing father to their boys. Glancing over at her husband, she had the happiest smile on her face. âI canât stop staring at them, they are perfect and I canât believe theyâre ours,â she said, stroking Asherâs tiny little cheek with her finger. The boys hadnât been born but thirty minutes yet and she already loved them so much. âWe need to take more pictures, especially of just us and them before our moms get in here. I know theyâre going to take a ton, too, but this private time has been nice.âÂ

there were moments in the last day and... however many hours, that sam found himself staring off into space, half-wondering when he would wake up from this dream. as the twinsâ due date got closer, the man kept having dreams about them â although âdreamsâ was too pleasant of a word to describe the scenes that played in his unconscious state. but the warmth of kateâs hand in his as they both went through the process of welcoming their sons helped keep him grounded and tied to reality. there was some squeezing coming from both parties, samâs coming from a place of nervousness, but also just constantly seeking for the reassurance that she was well, that he wasnât about to lose her forever. and almost every time he squeezed her hand in return, he would remind her of how much he loved her, and how good she was doing... delivering his giant children.
time became a blurry concept â if anyone were to ask him when they arrived or when the new family all ended up in a room together, sam wouldnât be able to give a concrete answer. running on low sleep and high anxiety would do that, but looking at kate gazing at the baby in her arms, after having been through so much in the last day... the effects were better than coffeeâs. he noticed kateâs voice hadnât changed, even after all the work sheâd done, and sam couldnât help but meet her eyes, his own filled with admiration. âthey are a couple of handsome fellas. you know, not to toot our horn or anything, just a... very objective observation.â he chuckled lightly as he turned his gaze onto the newborn baby he held, half in his arms, half on his knee. with a finger, he gently rubbed felixâs cheek, getting a coo from him either in response or in protest. the noise got a little chuckle out of sam. everything is really going to be alright, he thought to himself as he and his son looked into each otherâs eyes, both filled with infinite curiosity.Â
while still holding the newborn, the man wiggled a little to pull his phone out of his pocket, and pointed the back of it in kateâs direction. âyes, boss. hey, asher, say cheese!â he joked, as he tapped the screen a couple of times. âit is nice. theyâre so quiet right now, it... almost feels like a dream. it feels, i donât know, too perfect.â sam admitted, being true to his promise of sharing his feelings and thoughts instead of bottling them up and letting his anxiety win. but giving others time to process and help him was a skill he still had to work on, and before kate could even say anything to him about his statement, he switched the topic. âhow are you doing? you feeling alright? you really put in the work in there, kate. i am... i donât even know what i am.â he paused for a second. âproud? no, happy. no, i am in awe. actually, option d) all of the above.â he let out a small chuckle. âi think iâm just crazy in love with you. and i know these two scamps will be, too. in no time.â
