Luminous news stream
So and so reached a record high
Look those are cumulus clouds
If my love is in a funk, so am I
The rainforest receded
before I got to see it
I bought watermelon chunks
and spat the seeds into the trash
See there’s no canopy
Street thick with narrators
The past filters in like a gas
The joint lady from The D.A.R.E. Report: The Land of Decisions and Choices
At night the high school bleachers
leech moonlight.
Asleep little benches,
upright in the snow.
In time I graduated
past sacrifice & shrunk into
the hollows of my life.
Taverns mothered me.
Dandruff chipped my forehead
to dust, starring the barroom floor.
I stepped away from the center, from
the sheath dress, chewing down
an olive — a girl, maybe twenty,
raising her arms to be recalled.
She needs no mirror. Pale
in the throng of the possible.
The people will see her!
The people will violate
and hogtie & make her a star!
Nothing bad ever happened to me.
I wished on every eyelash
never to die.

It’s sheer love of gossip that propels me to read. But poetry is often characterless. The white space allows me to impose my own figures, while prose demands a more logical attention to chronological place and time. I can read a poem with a doubleness of mind— facts matter but so do the unsaid centers. How familiarly should the speaker of a poem address her interlocutor? Frank O’Hara talks to his reader like a friend— a texture of shared referents, and it gives off the spark of eavesdropping.

It is easy to feel terror from a pinprick.
The mind, all seeing
firehouse, combs its strobes for sickness.
After you are dead, perfect and sainted,
your tears will be anomalies
under glass.
Your body belongs to the flames
with no thought of what comes back
