'My 'deer' ancestors'

My fondness of all things aged, vintage, pre-loved and connection to my British ancestory prompted this work. This piece represents a part of my story, a connection with animal medicine, London and my childhood and family.

Hei Tiki - A spiritual Maori symbol of fertility meant to be worn around the neck by women. The Tohunga Whakairo (expert carver) traditionally carved these 'Pounamu' (Greenstone) for members of their tribe; imbuing spirit into the Hei tiki through their prayers and chants.

As I am Pakeha (white person) - I sought and was given permission by Maori Elders from my community to create my own representation of this symbol.
