Mount Griggs

This is the tallest mountain bordering the valley of ten thousand smokes. Climbers can begin their ascent from the western slopes. The final approach to the summit requires a tricky traverse of glaciers and a snow and ice covered knife-edged ridge. In late summer, water can be difficult to find near the base of Mount Griggs. Hikers can arrange to be dropped off and picked up from the valley with a Valley of ten thousand smokes tour group. Contact the park’s concessionaire Katmailand for fees and more information.

Buttress Range

There are several small inset alcoves that provide water as well as a perfect spot to camp. This ridge borders the western side of the valley of ten thousand smokes. The most popular way of entering the valley is by hiking along the base of the buttress range. The Savonoski Loop is an 80 mile paddle through the scenic backcountry of Katmai National Park.

This trip begins and ends at Brook Camp. the trip in it’s entirety takes 4-10 days. If you don’t want to or aren’t able to paddle the whole way, there are portage trails from Naknek Lake to Grosvenor Lake.

Alum Cave Bluff

The full trail is 7.5 miles long

The hike to the Alum Cave Bluffs is 2.5 miles. The trail continues past the cave for 5 miles and ends just below the summit of Mt. Le Conte

The trail has an elevation change of 1,200 and is very steep.

Driving to the trailhead: Drive 8.6 miles on Newfound Gap Road from Sugarlands Visitor Center or 20 miles from Oconaluftee Visitor Center. There is a sign and two large parking areas marking the trailhead.

Katmai is a very old park. Established in 1918 this park has some of the richest history of all of the national parks. From B.C.E. to the current day this park has had a lot going on. The park has been a national monument and is now a park and preserve. It has had oil spills and archaeological sites. The park is and always will be a national treasure.

Katmai National Park has its camp ground at Brooks camp. This camp has no designated sites and has a 60 person limit. Reservations are required and cost $12 for the majority of the year. The campsite has cooking shelters, storage caches, a water spigot, toilets, and a electric fence surrounding the campground. The park also offers Brooks lodge which has cabins that can be reserved for up to two weeks. Other private lodges are available of private land surrounding Katmai.

Bear watching

You can observe brown bears in their natural habitat by heading to Brooks Camp, Katmai’s Pacific coast, or even Katmai’s bear watching live stream on their website.

All bear watching activities at Katmai National Park begin at the Brooks Camp Visitor Center with a brief talk about “bear etiquette”. Afterward, a park ranger will lead you to your bear watching destination.

Katmai is home to six active volcanoes and ten inactive volcanoes. Due to this the terrain of Katmai is mostly mountainous. There are quite a few lakes to the west and the north along with many rivers through out the park.

Katmai National Park is located in Alaska and covers just over 4 million acres of land. The park is also protected by the ANILCA acts that says that the park is to be preserved for the habitats of the wildlife including the grizzly/brown bears, the large populations of salmon, and to protect the scenic, geological, cultural, and recreational features.
