So having been in online fandom spaces since 1997 (stop laughing at me, @iconuk01 I can hear you! Lol)

I wanted to impart some things I've learned that might be useful, considering some of the behaviors I've noticed in my current fandom.

1. Do not expect a piece of media you did not create to do what you want. Be delighted when it does. But deep expectations will destroy you and your enjoyment.

2. The actors you love do not need you to defend them online. Many of them make more money than the rest of us will ever see. If they're that bothered, they can lawyer up. They do not need you. They are not your little babies. They are grown ass people. I know that's hard because your knee jerk reaction is to jump into the fight. Save yourself the anxiety. Go eat a snack instead.

3. There will always be other fans trying to stir shit for attention. Again. Go eat a snack instead of feeding the trolls. You don't need to feed their toxicity.

4. If a piece of media makes you uncomfortable, sit with that. Think about it. Don't just rag on it as something you hate. Hold it in your hands and think about it.

5. In ten years, you're gonna cringe hard at some of the shit you put online. That's okay. We all do.

6. Your ship is two characters who do not exist in the real world. Debate stuff with other fans. Don't make it personal. Don't be cruel. You're acting like a bad person over something that doesn't exist outside its book/tv show/movie/comic. It's not worth hurting a real person.

7. Have fun. That's the whole point. If it's not fun, re-examine. Make friends. Create content. Enjoy this shit. That's what it's there for.

night/fantasy vs. day/reality

MY COTTAGE is the only place where we see Benedict and Sophie happy together during the day (reality). Arriving at night, Benedict offers Sophie the guest room, establishing them as "equals" despite being a gentleman and a maid. In the morning, however, the Crabtrees' arrive to act as chaperones. At breakfast, and during Sophie's garden stroll, Benedict and Sophie are kept apart, emotionally and physically, by reality.

A turning point occurs in BENEDICT'S STUDY at night, as they open up to each other as Benedict and Sophie for the first time. Next, the kite scene, the thesis of Benedict and Sophie's relationship (she grounds him, he encourages her to fly), is the the first time we see them together in daylight, happy, alone, with nothing in their way. The lake scene follows; Sophie switches into a silver dress, a nod to the fantasy of the Lady in Silver in the reality of daylight.

But that night, Mrs. Crabtree advises Benedict to stay away from Sophie, reality encroaching on fantasy's time of day. Returning to the study, it's day instead of night, and instead of focusing on her lips, Benedict tells Sophie he regrets their kiss. Leaving in the morning, Sophie reminds herself and Benedict that it's not "her place" to give him a route to London.

In LONDON, Benedict and Sophie only ever interact during the day when they're "fighting" or "broken up." It's only after nightfall that they may retreat to their fantasy, where they can be alone together (episode 4), confess their love (episode 5), or make plans for the future (episode 6). But then, just like Mrs. Crabtree, Anthony confronts Benedict at night with a reality check, and the fantasy of their life together cannot be sustained.

After their breakup and throughout episode 7, Benedict and Sophie only ever see each other in the harsh reality of day, and only almost meet at dusk — the transition between day to night, where fantasy meets reality — when Benedict returns to BRIDGERTON HOUSE to propose, but it's too late!

In episode 8, Benedict and Sophie reunite in court during the day, but can't properly resolve their miscommunication until nightfall. Sophie sneaks into Penwood House during the day, but is also barred from returning to Benedict until night, at which point he tells her about Mrs. Mondrich's call and their plan to spin the fantasy of "Sophie Gun."

Again and again, reality keeps them apart during the day, and fantasy brings them together at night.

Day always gives way to night, but night always gives way to day. Benedict and Sophie are always drawn to each other, just as they're always being pulled apart.

On and on and on, the cycle goes.

In being intentional about placing every Benedict and Sophie scene at a particular time of day, the season builds this subconscious association that it is rare and precious to see them happy together in daylight. It’s like seeing your teacher at the grocery store — you’re just not used to them in that context. This rarity makes the moments where they are happy during the day (reality) feel even more special: the kite scene, the lake scene, and of course, their wedding. Finally, they've married fantasy and reality together.

first(ish) impressions: introductions, names, and reputations

But if Simon almost let himself get killed to run from his feelings for Daphne, and Kate kept saying she was leaving for India to run from her feelings for Anthony and she was going to let him marry her sister, and Penelope almost married Lord Debling because she thought Colin would never love her back and thus was in a way running from her feelings for him, and Sophie was about leave for America to run from her feelings for Benedict, and Michaela actually fled the country to run from her feelings for Francesca then who the fuck is driving the bus? (It was John and he just died so they're going to crash)

She is so far gone there is no saving her and the worst part is that she thinks she’s being subtle. She thinks she’s hiding it well she thinks she can have a normal friendship with her cousin’s wife and they can all live happily ever after and no one will suspect a thing and she can bury those feeling deep inside of her until the day she dies meanwhile she wants her so bad she can barely contain it in her body. She is shooting devotion laser beams from her eyes and soul that are visible from planet mars and she screams about it into her pillows every night

I've seen a lot of weird takes and it's honestly gotten annoying.

1. Yes, Benedict is a rake, but Sophie is far from naive. Aside from Kate, Sophie knew what sex was. She knew how pregnancies occurred. She knew exactly when her period would arrive, and she knew what it meant if it didn't. She KNOWS what she's doing. I'm tired of people acting like she had no idea what was going on when the show repeatedly shows you that she does.

2. Luke Thompson is a great actor however you WILL notice a difference in Benedict's character in season 4 compared to 1-3. In seasons 1-3, he is a side character. A side character with his own little side plot. In season 4, episode 1, start to see Benedict change after Sophie (as the Lady In Silver) shares her own opinions, thoughts, and views. This changes his perspective on how he sees certain things. He understands that all the debutante and women of the ton are just hoping to be noticed. They do not pry on him for fun but because of the societal pressure to marry. He also starts to mature. He is put into a role he never once wanted. He never wanted to be viscount but must take over his brother's duty so that him and Kate can enjoy the birth of their newborn. With Anthony's absence he must be there for his younger siblings. But I specifically want to point out that his character development goes with the fact that he is older and has more responsibilities and must thus act responsibly.

3. None of the bridgerton couples have no chemistry. When it comes to bridgerton, you must remember that it's different stories, different tropes, and different personalities. You cannot expect Polin and Benophie to have the same level of tension as Saphne or Kanthony and vice versa. Friends to Lovers won't have the same intensity as Enemies to Lovers. Benophie and Polin get along immediately. They do not start as enemies or with dislike. Kanthony and Saphne do not start with friendliness. They won't give the same energy. You can have a favourite ship and you can dislike a ship that's your own opinion however don't treat it as a fact.

4. If you are the type of person who likes to bring up numbers, don't get upset when people bring up ratings and the problematic aspects of the season. If you are a die-hard season 1 fan and constantly bring up season ratings, aesthetics, etc. don't be surprised when people bring up how the storyline is much weaker compared to all the other seasons. Unfortunately, just because a season is the most watched doesn't mean it's the most liked. If you use one season's ratings to bring down another's don't be defensive when people bring out ratings, especially critic's ratings.

5. Stop bringing up one actor's success to bring down another. It's weird. For some reason, it's always Nicola, and it's bringing more hate to Nicola than the fans who start these fanwars. Leave Nicola alone. If you want to praise her, praise her without bringing in someone else.

6. Stop complaining about Bridgerton's diversity. If you hate the diversity so much, stop watching the show read the books and stick to it. Like stop telling us about how you dont want [insert character] in the show anymore. Or why did they change [insert character]. A book to film/series adaptation does not have to be book accurate. They're only required to keep to the original plot. If you dont like that, read the books and stick to them.

7. All seasons are for different people. In the same way, the books are for different people. If you don't like the Second Chance At Romance tropes don't watch season 5, if you don't like the Pen Pals tropes don't watch season 6. Don't watch if you don't like.

8. Can these anonymous accounts thats keep telling people how much they hate Kate stop? Why would you go to the page of a Kate fan and tell us you don't like her? We do not care.
