Standstills...

So..

I'm having such a hard time with finding volunteer work. I've found walks for causes to support with participation and aid but those aren't for at least a month -___- I would love something now, something that can be done within the next week!

One that I am super excited about that will be Light the Night in October! there will be a carnival, games, and a walk. They need volunteers that you can still sign up for. I had originally signed up to work the games and carnival but was given the options to hand out balloons to kiddos, pass out waters to runners/walkers, etc. But seeing how there is a carnival I mentioned my face painting skills to the coordinator and one minute later she emailed me about how fantastic the idea would be be if I were to do that for the kids!

Never be afraid/hesitant to let event coordinators know of what skills you have that are relevant to the event you would volunteer for! It may be the thing that could kick the event up a notch for the cause to bring more people to the event and most importantly: give one on one time to talk about the reasons these events are held: raising awareness!

Hopefully I can get out of this slump and pump up the material on this page!

Soldier's Angels- the care package

Sent out my first care package today and may have inspired my little sister's friend to join the cause! All in all a great of accomplishment today :]

On the SA website, I've seen different lists of items that soldiers hope to receive in these care packages. Included in mine were: beef jerkies, oral hygiene products, sunflower seeds and gum, a pair of sunglasses, a shaving razor with cartridges, some UCF fan items, and an archie comic book ot over 400 comics lol as well as a card wishing him a better day.

My soldier has never told me what he wanted so I based his wishes off of what I would want to receive as well as what other soldiers have requested. I enjoyed sending off this package today because I found out that the USPS has special boxes that are specifically only sent to soldiers around the world. I'm proud that I had gone to them than any other postal service because of the support they share as well.

As of the beginning of July 2012, I am now a "Verified Angel!"

Soldier's Angels is an organization dedicated to our armed forces. They We aid them by showing them our support and thanks by providing them with love and appreciation through letters and care packages. They accept donations and help through volunteers who provide services in teams or in a lot of cases those who go solo (like myself).

SA has such a variety of ways to help our soldiers. You can join one of the many teams and projects they have created and put on their website soldiersangels.com . You can join a letter writing team, make care packages, bake cookies; whatever you love to do for people you care about, you can do for our soldiers!

What I've decided to do to help our servicemen and women is by adopting a soldier. To adopt a soldier is to take up one of the most major commitments that SA has. When you adopt a soldier, he/she is yours to take care of while they are deployed. Your serviceperson can me in the Army, the Navy, the Marines, etc and are hundreds or thousands of miles away and a kind heart can be what continues their fight to keep us safe and secure.

After becoming a verified angel with a donation as little as $1, you can adopt as many soldiers as you like, but be sure to keep up with your commitment! 

The commitment I have made is to write at least one letter a week and send at least one care package per month to my personal adopted soldier... seems like a small gesture, right? This is anything but!

Kat's Helpful Hands

Good afternoon all! Welcome to Kat's Helpful Hands!

I'm Kat, I'm currently 22 years young and I live in Orlando, FL. I'm a humble student at one of the largest universities in the nation: the University of Central Florida (GO KNIGHTS!) I am part of a wonderful family of five: a mom, dad, a not so baby sister and older brother. We have 2 dogs (Obi Wan and Bino) and a fish :)

Why I've started this blog is to log all the different volunteer services I've been blessed to be a part of and all that I do that leads to completing each service. Included here will be information on what I'll be doing, what organization had put it together and what each organization stands for. Also included will be even upcoming services that you may want to look into whether you want to join for fun or to accumulate hours for scholarships and whatnot (I've got a little sister in high school, I know how it goes!)

My goal is to perform an organized volunteer service every month or more and to keep you updated on each and every one of them no matter how big or small!

Why I want to do this: I've always felt very blessed for the things that I have and I am very well aware of things that I have that others don't. What I view as my daily essentials and necessities, are things that others see as luxuries.

I don't have a lot of my own money, but what I do have are helpful hands and a strong heart. I know what it is like to not have a lot or to feel like there is no hope, but myself paired with organizations that share the same feelings can together mend as many hopes and dreams as possible. If even to brighten one person's day is all I can do, then I'll consider it a day fulfilled.

And if YOU have helpful hands, feel free to share your work for inspiration or ask for help! Don't be shy, I'd be happy to lend a helpful hand :)
