The Birds That Stay is a thrilling Québécois noir murder mystery that I really enjoyed and included a cool taste of historical fiction as well. I’d say it’s different than many novels in the same type of detective/crime thriller genre. My biggest complaint is there were a few too many characters and storylines happening throughout, but overall I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next in the series. DID YOU KNOW I’ve had type one diabetes (T1D) for 20 years? Last summer, I switched from multiple-times-daily insulin injections to an insulin pump, and life has changed. Actually posted some reviews on the blog this week and The Possessions (a good ol’ #unreadbotmchallenge pick) is one of those. Reminiscent of Behind Her Eyes, but quite as fast-paced or thrilling, this novel was definitely unique from anything I’ve read, but I felt so unsatisfied with it. Tiny Hot Dogs is a fun and quirky memoir from “caterer to the stars” Mary Giuliani. Super likeable persona with a little bit of an overload in name-dropping, this book was enjoyable, but not entirely up my alley. Check out the full review over on A Paper Arrow. Finally got around to reading Pet Sematary for the first time in about 15 years. I finished it around the time the film came out, and loved it just as much as I did before. I have some feelings about the new Pet Sematary adaptation. I’m still processing, so I’m not sure if I loved it or not. But the characters and relationships were a bit off, and there were certainly some liberties taken with the plot. Everything moved through pretty quickly. There were lots of jumps and scares. Mobile, Alabama is pretty weird. It’s lazy and slow, but also a city with a cruise port (which brings in a fair amount of people) and surprisingly, the birthplace of Mardi Gras. I didn’t really know a ton when I dove into Daisy Jones & the Six - just that everyone was obsessed. But I’m so excited I read it. It’s like reading an episode of VH1’s Where Are They Now? I couldn’t get enough of Daisy. And the book is so QUOTABLE. And weirdly, this whole book reminded me of a favorite sitcom I won’t name because I don’t want to spoil anything (DM me if you know what I mean!). Then TJR wrapped it all up with amazing lyrics. Our Kind of Cruelty is a mix of You, Gone Girl, and 50 Shades of Grey, but has surprisingly feminist undertones. This is one of the most powerful memoirs I’ve ever read. I felt like some of the chapters were written straight from my personal thoughts. Roxane Gay is an incredibly powerful writer, and I am so in awe of her.
