Ok so I brought up that I was going to make “Egg in a Hat” for breakfast and one of my great friends showed some curiosity so I thought that just for the hell of it I would make a tutorial so that any who do not know the wonders of this simple dish might feel compelled to try it. It’s seriously easy to make so a tutorial is not even close to necessary actually.
I actually I had never heard of or seen this before and totally thought I invented it until I saw “V for Vendetta” and realized he totally cooks this in it!
It’s great with lots of types of bread and REALLY good in bagels, though I have to widen the middle for that.
Ok so get two pieces of bread (or one is great, too!) and make holes in the middle of them. I used a fancy tool but I usually just rip the middle out with my fingers. A large shot glass will work too or a small regular glass. Keep the insides, it’s nicer if they stay intact!
Do this to both pieces and set aside the middle.
Next get a pan (large for two, small for one) and put some butter in there to melt.
It is way easier to me if I take both pieces and rub BOTH sides of them in the melty butter, then you have evenly buttered bread! I used to be silly about it and then one side was all buttery and the other was totally missing out.
Then you will crack an egg carefully into each one. If the hole is too small the egg will sometimes run over and that’s totally ok and still super delicious!
I usually do this over medium to high heat.
Watch for the eggs to start getting opaque at the bottom.
You still want the top to be pretty gooey, to be honest in this photo I let them go a bit too far because I was too busy taking pictures. I LOVE my yolks runny, especially with Egg in a Hat, so I always try really hard not to let it go too long. Obviously you can cook them to your own liking! So at this point flip them over but be careful not to break the yolk or anything. Quick and confident flip! Remember to flip the middle pieces too!
Let this cook for just a little bit, you can flip them over and poke it a bit and flip it back if you think it’s not ready. You’ve done most of the cooking on the other side so at this point you just want to get the whites cooked. Sometimes I try to make it more even so that the bread toasts evenly. Sometimes I even toast the bread FIRST so it’s going to be crispy for sure.
Ok so you can take it off the heat and put it all on a plate now, and now you have a super delicious and easy meal!
I usually like to add salt over the whole thing and then add a bit more salt once the yolk is revealed because I usually think that part especially needs salt.
It’s awesome because you have bread to soak up all of the glorious egg yolk and it adds some crunch and interesting texture to the eggs.
Seriously, it’s incredibly awesome!
* There are LOTS of different names for this and they are pretty much all super cute. I like “Egg in a Hat” and it’s what I became accustomed to saying but the other ways are awesome too!
Egg in a hole (Several people mentioned that they call it “Toad in the Hole” but that is actually already the name of a different dish that involves sausage. If that’s how you know it, that’s great! Just know that it could get confusing!)
EDIT: Mr. Pond calls them “Howdy Doody Eggs” and was quite cross with me for leaving that out.
Seriously there are like a million names!
What do you call them? Answer in the comments!
