White Picket Fence

The imagery of a little girl peering into a futuristic, abstract home with the upside-down room, satirical vignettes and incongruent furnishings clearly demonstrates that the first part of this video is not an ode to romance, but rather, a study of two inherently gay people trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. The white picket fence foretells the little girl’s dreamy expectations of finding her prince charming and living in a perfect home with a white picket fence. There is much sarcasm in the video, like the spaghetti dinner with cranberry from a can and eggs on pizza, all of which represents things that don’t go together. It’s not a romantic dinner, it’s comedic, and the characters are blissfully unaware of their mismatch. When Taylor enters the closet to go up to the attic to watch her real-life dreams play out, this is when we know that “end game” is about abandoning conformity, embracing a non-conventional loving relationship and finding your real true love.

Another clue in plain sight: In the wedding industry, the image of two pink flamingos, whether on a wedding invitation or on top of a wedding cake, usually represents a lesbian couple.

Taylor in the AT&T commercial hiding in the closet wearing rainbow tennis shoes. Taylor in her rainbow dress tweeting, “out now.” Yes, she is trying to tell us something.

Interpreting Taylor’s poem:  The first stanza refers to a traumatic event that left her feeling exposed, as well as damaged some dreams she’s had since childhood. She felt alone and had only herself to rely on. The “ink” represents what people said or wrote about her in the aftermath. She judged herself as harshly as her critics did, succumbing to self-defeating voices in her head. She imagined going back in time and doing things differently (“time machine”) and thought about how to avenge the betrayals. She became cautious and avoided the lure of glittery facades (shiny pennies). The “ocean up to her neck” was a baptismal experience, a healing storm. A “broad-shouldered” companion was then standing next to her giving support and unconditional love —a lifeline. She will love with an open heart again, even if it means risking another heartbreak, albeit never at the hands of the person/persons who hurt her before. This is a new beginning, a new way of approaching a relationship that would never be possible but for her previous painful experiences. Rebirth.
