Bumblebee sees Charlie’s open, waiting hands, and - without memory, completely on instinct, scared out of his mind - leans in for gentle face touches.

I just want that to be an old part of Cybertronian pre-war culture. that’s how you greet friends or loved ones - softly resting your head in their hands. Bumblebee has nothing else, but Charlie makes a gesture that automatically pings his deepest instincts for a safe, beloved friend.

and then the war happens, and you get battle masks that alter/cover the face deliberately, because who can afford to leave themselves vulnerable just for the sake of affectionate gestures in a war zone?

I gotta elaborate - I mean full on chirolinguistics level stuff from the IDW comics. you touch your hands to someone’s face, and the sensors/circuits press emotions across the gap. a slap hurts so much more when you get the visceral hate of an enemy soldier smacked across sensors that are sensitized to soft gestures of affection.

tiny human hands and their tiny nerve endings dont pack the same touch, but they are so very soft and kind all the same.

The comics canon gives us lots of delicious pain to play with there, not just what’s on the page, but playing with the idea of downgraded optics and vocalizers, playing with the idea that even if you get another face built, it will never be the SAME–

And now, add on the idea that they take this very personal, very intimate method of communication away from you. No face, no hands. You’ll never be able to touch someone else this way again, but even past that, nobody will ever be able to touch you this way. Nobody will be able to offer you that kind of intimate comfort again, because those sensors were stripped away along with the rest of your face.
