The temporary pause is over! Samplerbot is up and samplering again, and all the requests I saw in the notes have been queued up along with its regular posts.

Today's update has a couple parts to it: first, four new borders have been added; second, I've made it easier (on my end) to test new borders, new fonts, and new styles of sampler in bulk, and to tweak all those things if they don't look right at first; and finally, Samplerbot has a new style of sampler: Lasagna Samplers!

The lasagna samplers are inspired by Elizabeth Holland's sampler from 1737 (Samplerbot's 'border 66' was adapted from her work, too!). Along with a regular border, lasagna samplers have decorative dividers in-between the lines of text (the lasagna 'noodles', you could call them).

I'm currently working on making it so every existing border could make a lasagna sampler, but since Samplerbot just passed 150 borders (!🥳) it'll probably take me a while.

Also, not new, but I'm very happy with how the new line spacing function is working. I think this next batch of samplers is going to be very lovely!

After last nights Khemjira episode and Khem taking off Peem's pants I figured we should have a conversation about the type of pants he was wearing.

I know you might not have noticed them in the below photo but Peem wears this type of tied pants a lot in the show. Like this...

And let me tell you, I don't blame him for wearing this type of pants all the freaking time because they are soooo comfy, and I'm sure Khem appreciated the easy access.

Since three people's asked what the pants are called, I figured I'd respond here because one thing I didn't mention in the original post is that I've been working on making my own pants for the last two years and I wanted to share my thoughts to anyone who wanted to buy some or make some for themselves.

Short answer:

I don't think there's an official English name for them but looking up "wrap pants" will get you both patterns and places that sell them.

If anyone's looking for the Thai name @visualtaehyun mentioned that they're called "กางเกง 4 สาย", which apparently means "4-string pants".

If you want the simple kind Peem and I have, Etsy or similar online stores might be a good place, just make sure to check where the store is located so you avoid any unexpected import fees.

The pants are very simple to sew so if you have access to a sewing machine and some suitable fabrics and have the time, I'd highly recommend doing that. I have a lot of thoughts around the process and how to do things, so I'll expand on that below the cut.

Long answer:

I got mine in Chiang Mai and you could buy versions of these flowey pants all over the place in Chiang Mai, but surprisingly we only ever saw one place with these simple single color versions which are honestly my favorite. I can't remember off the top of my head where the store was but if anyone's interested I could probably find out.

In terms of making them yourselves they are very easy because they only consist of two squares of fabric with the crotch area cut out and the two strings and you can find many patterns online with measurements based of clothing size.

Below image is a simplified version of my own pattern. You basically cute out two identical pieces of fabric, where each piece becomes a pant leg. You then place them on top of each other with the out- side facing each other and then sew them together at the orange. Then you just have to make the strings and sew the sides to make the edges nice.

Some tips for anyone wanting to sew some yourself:

Pick a good fabric. Rayon/viscose seems to work best but I saw someone mention linen as well which I think at least some of Peem's are made of. You want a fabric that isn't too heavy or too light, not too stiff or too flexible, which has been my main problem and the reason for why I haven't made a pair myself yet: it's really hard to find in-person stores with just the right rayon in just the right color. I've made several pairs of shorts so far but mostly from polyester or cotton. I particularly wouldn't recommend the polyester but it is doable with the right fabric.

Sew in the wedge at the hip. This is something I've noticed most patterns online don't include but I really like the look of it. The wedges in question are the two purple wedges at the top of the pants which are taken in. You basically fold the edges of each wedge so the lines touch each other and sew the fabric together. Since most people's waist is smaller than their hip, these wedges means the width of the pants at the top is shorter than further down, which means that the pants are pulled less towards to middle at the top and instead follow a less curved line. I tried to illustrate this with the picture below, so I hope it made sense. You can test out the effect of making these wedges by pinning in the wedges before you finish sewing the top of the pants. Just attach the strings and create the wedges with pins or something similar and try the pants on. The direction of the wedges are important so the resulting seams end up horizontal.
