1960s pink teddy bear
unboxed a 2004 CPK today!
I made her new dress.
I made her new dress.
"oh barbie was the first woman dol, it was only babies before her"
crepereia tryphaena didn't die for this kind of slander
you are so right
crepereia tryphaena (2nd or 3rd century CE) did not die at the age of 20 and get buried with her clearly beloved ivory lady doll for this
(this doll had fucking JEWELRY. and G*rwig says Barbie was the first fashion doll? give me a break)
honestly, most of the Firsts or Onlys people want to attribute to Barbie aren't real.
"but she was the first fashion doll meant for play, not just showing off clothing!"
there's actually less evidence of dolls meant only for displaying new fashions in history than dolls intended for children to play with AND to incidentally show their mothers and older sisters the latest styles. even so-called "milliners' models" of the late 18th-early 19th century are now believed to have been primarily toys
"but she was the first one with a [cis] woman's body!"
see above. the ancient Roman doll has breasts. she was not the last doll with breasts before Barbie- and lots of the intervening lady dolls weren't flat due to prudishness as many suppose, but because the same bodies were often used for male dolls. saves money, work, and time to just bang out a bunch of gender-neutral stuffed or carved bodies and let the clothes and hair determine the gender. Creatable World isn't new, either
the reson for Barbie's massive success wasn't that she was the First Fashion Doll in a sea of baby dolls. it's that she filled a very specific niche that was empty when she came along: a small, relatively affordable fashion doll that gave a 3-D paper doll experience. (Everyone likes to talk about Barbie's roots with the Bild Lilli doll; nobody brings up that Ruth Handler was equally inspired by her daughter's movie star paper dolls.)
lady dolls WERE scarce when Barbie came out, and she DID face pushback for her adult, somewhat sexy look. That's true. But she was not unique in history- she was just the right idea, in the right place, at the right time
You all need to hear this:
1. You probably dont suck at your craft as much as you think you do, I bet a lot of people are amazed at what you can make, and
2. If you actually are the Literal Worst In The Whole Wide World at your craft... who the fuck cares? What are they gonna do, call the police on you? Keep making your shitty little things, youre the boss of you, fuck the haters.

buccal fat this, buccal fat that
this is what a Beautiful Lady DollTM c. 1880 looked like, from the regions where this ridiculous surgery is now becoming popular (namely, Europe/the U.S.):
(fashion doll by the Gesland firm, c. 1880, from my personal collection. I call her Marinette)
forget buccal fat removal; she’s a poster child for buccal fat augmentation. and a solid 99% of them are like that: moon-faced with little double-chins. this is the IDEAL, remember. this is basically their Barbie
it’s not that body shaming didn’t exist back then, mind; advertisements make it painfully clear. my point is more that beauty standards are a moving target. and on a more immediate level, to show women with similar faces that. somewhere in time, the majority of people in their culture considered plump cheeks the epitome of beauty
if anyone ever tries to body-shame you, remember that there was a whole span of at least 20 years when the most popular Beautiful Lady DollsTM in Europe and the US had double-chins and cheeks that look like they had buccal fat augmentation:
this is Barbie, 1860s-1880s
and she may not have a realistic body either, but she is a stylized rendition of Plump Lady Wearing Normally-Laced Corset
and everyone looked at these dolls and thought "wow, that is depicting a beautiful woman!"
and they were right, as are all appreciators of any women
Shout out to my fellow round face girlies. You know what else is round and beautiful? The moon. She’s been bewitching men for centuries with her round glow. She’s got curves and edges and pits but everyone is enchanted. You’re like the moon. You shimmer. Don’t let some shitass trend take that away.
