My Story

When I was a toddler, my parents divorced. My brother and I lived full time with my mother. When I was around fourteen years old, my father remarried. His new wife had a five-year-old son from a previous relationship. Her son, “J” was autistic, and at five years old, had a pretty significant language delay. J would speak in very simple words and phrases, but did not use verbs, and would often resort to pointing and screaming by means of communication. J’s mother was not familiar with autism, and coming from a low-income and strong religious background in her Latin culture, did not believe in developmental delays. During the times when we would get together for family events, I would sit with J and try to help him with his communication. I was just a teenager at this point, with no education in speech services, so I would just walk with J throughout the house and point to objects and say the word. After each word, I would have him point to the object and repeat the word after me. I did some research and asked a few of my high school teachers how I could help J. After learning about Speech Language Pathology, I told J’s mom that there were therapists out there that could help him with his language. She was without health insurance at the time and could not find many services that could help J and fit her budget. Over the years, I have helped connect my stepmom and J with some low, or free cost services and education. Through his school, local teaching hospitals, and government assistance, J was able to develop his language to communicate effectively with nearly all people that he encounters. My stepmom has also gained invaluable knowledge about J’s disability and how she can help her son be successful in his life. J has now graduated high school and is almost living independently.

Improving Vocabulary

Young adolescents from low socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to present with language difficulties, particularly with vocabulary. There are numerous studies showing the positive effect that vocabulary interventions have on early childhood education, but not for adolescents aged 11-13 years old. In this study, researchers from the University of Limerick, Ireland, looked at, “pre-intervention and post-intervention measures of receptive and expressive language; word definitions; receptive vocabulary (standardized assessments/subtests) and word associations (criterion referenced subtest)” in two hundred and three secondary school children.
