Why am I bringing all of this up?

Because mod is currently working on a kickstarter to publish a second volume of her webcomic, The Property of Hate!

As you can see, as of today, October 30th, there are only 9 days to go and we’re barely halfway there

Why should you care about Tpoh? Well, in addition to being a charming, heartwrenching, pun-filled and exciting adventure, it also features an extremely diverse cast of characters. The main characters are a young british-indian girl and her telly-headed guide (who is canonically pansexual, with both a girlfriend and an ex boyfriend appearing in canon). There are a wonderful pair of wives, a nonbinary main character as well as a genderfluid one, and all kinds of amazing twists and turns. Not to mention the art is amazing

Basically, if you’re not reading it already, you definitely should. And you should also help Mod make this amazing step forward into getting her story out to a broader audience.

This is amazing, y'all. In the last 2 days we’ve been able to pull in almost 2k thanks to all of you! We’re in the home stretch now, with one week to go. Long time no post! I know I’ve been pretty dead on Tumblr, but I’m back to say I’m doing Inktober this year. Here’s the cover page for my project, plus my prompt list. I’m going to be interpreting Greek gods as monsters (though not necessarily in the order of the prompt list.)

New Year’s Resolutions 2017

(Under cut)

1. Set aside some time (almost) every day to draw. Before 2016, I’d gotten back into the habit of doing this, but it kind of fell apart last Spring and never really recovered. I’d like to get back to it being habit. 

2. Draw more fanart. Related to the first goal, I think this will help me draw a little more often without feeling pressure to draw something 100% original all the time. I think I’d also benefit from drawing some other people’s characters as practice.

3. Post some kind of art more weeks than not. I messed this one up so badly last year I feel like I’m almost legally obligated to include it again.

4. Watch more Power Rangers/ Super Sentai. Probably a silly goal, but I’m skipping all the “Watch X number of movies” etc. goals I normally have, so I figured this would be okay. I’ve been stuck on Carranger ever since the site I was watching it on went down, and I’d like to log a few more series in 2017. Otherwise I’ll never catch up. 

5. Start the webcomic. It’s still depressing how many years this has been on the list. We’ll see, 2017.

2016 Resolutions Report Card

I thought about not doing this for 2016. There was a very real point in the year where I thought to myself, “I guess I won’t do the resolution post thing anymore. It’s not worth it.” Yet here I am, something like a New Year’s drunk calling up their exes, writing another sad New Year’s post. Because I’ve been doing this since 2012 (when the whole “communicating in GIFS” thing was still Tumblr’s main dialect), and I am seemingly incapable of change.

I’m going to preface this year a little. As I said, I’ve been doing this for something like 5 years now. Every year I make resolutions, every year I keep an actual running chart/list to track my progress, and every year (except, like, one) I face the New Year feeling literally sick with dread and guilt about how poorly I did. Every year I make a post that’s pretty bleak, but ends with some kind of hope. 

This year I thought I’d save myself the guilt. Around the middle of the year I stopped updating my Resolution Tracker for the first time ever. I gave up, officially. I thought I’d feel feel less like a failure if I removed those arbitrary goalposts I’d set for myself. I thought maybe I’d actually get more done if I wasn’t constantly worried I still wasn’t good enough.

That....didn’t work. I don’t feel any better, and I certainly didn’t get any more done. If anything, I feel a lot worse. So we’re going to call 2016 a failed experiment and resolution-keeping and go back to the charts and lists for 2017.

As part of that, I guess I can’t skip this report card. Results and general year-end impressions are under the break. I know this is the first post I’ve made on this blog since...almost last year, actually, so this is a little weird. But really, what in 2016 wasn’t? 

(Fair warning, this year’s particularly bleak. I’m kind of self conscious about how whiny it comes across, so maybe don’t read this unless your misery loves company.)

1. Loosen up my art style. Focus more on drawing action/motion.

I had to go back to double check the sketchbooks on this one, because I was fully prepared to mark in down as a failure...but I think I somehow accidentally succeeded? I definitely did less structured practice (and drawing in general) throughout the year than I’d intended, but I can’t deny most of what I did do seemed to help me loosen up a bit, particularly with expressions. About 90% of what I drew this year was garbage, but I guess it was more of a learning experience than I realized. 

2. Post some kind of art more weeks than not.

I didn’t even make it until March. Fun fact, there was a point where I did the math and figured out that if I restarted this goal that week and kept it up consistently I could still make it with just over half the weeks of the year. I didn’t.

Sidenote: I can’t believe I’ve never used this GIF in a report card before.

3. Launch the webcomic. Update more weeks than not.

There’s genuinely not a GIF I could put here that wouldn’t feel tacky and inadequate. This time last year I was so sure this would be the year I finally made my comic happen. To quote myself in the most depressing way possible:

“ I know that it’s very likely end-of-2016 me will be reading this and cringing because I never actually got the comic started, or let it die after three updates, or switched to some completely different project in August. I’m painfully aware that every year I end this summary on a hopeful note and every year has ended up disappointing. But I feel better about this project than I ever have before, and I’m already so much closer than I’ve ever been. It’s started to feel real for the first time in my life. “

I can get into the “whys” of this failure in the end of the year summary, but for now I’ll say “cringing” is an understatement. Reading that post, I feel miserable. I have no one to blame but myself, and I’ll probably be blaming myself forever.

4. Watch 20 movies I’ve never seen before.

   Like I said, I stopped tracking this stuff partway through the year. I had to try and remember what I’d seen in the last couple of months, so I might have forgotten one or two. The thing is, the least of this year’s problems was me wasting too little time glued to a screen...It’s just I mostly watched shows instead of movies. 

5. Read 30 books I’ve never read before.

This is another one I might be missing a few “points” on, and another one where I don’t really feel like much of a failure. I did a lot of reading this year, it’s just that I don’t count things like volumes of manga and serialized comics on this list. If I did, I easily doubled my goal. I might not have read a ton of prose, but I definitely read.

6. Beat three video games I’ve never beaten before.

At a certain point “success” becomes “procrastination” and I probably hit that point at game six. But I’ll take what I can get this year.

...And that was that. Honestly I’m really only torn up over one failure this year, and it should be obvious which one it was. I think 2016 was a bad year for literally every living human, and I was no exception. I told someone today it seemed like 2016 was just one long fever dream that happened around me, while I did almost nothing of any significance myself. Reflecting on things today, it was honestly hard for me to remember events from this year from my personal life, while the bizarre horror of the rest of the world stood out in sharp and depressing detail.

I’m still stuck in the same house as last year (and the year before that). I still have the same lovable but completely dead-end job, even though the store drama and staff upheavals from this year could fill a novel. I still have my dog, though I lost my childhood one. In short, my life was completely stagnant this year, and I feel more than a little dead inside. 

There were some good things this year, but they were of the “pleasant distraction” variety, not the “actual life progress” variety. I had fun with the Pokemon Go phenomenon, watched a lot of good anime, and read some great comics. I had some fun times with friends and picked up a couple of new interests. I figured out some stuff about myself which might help me in the long run. I ate a lot of good food. I earned a lot of points on my Speedway card. 

But in the end there’s only so much some mobile games and some good restaurant discoveries can do in the face of a year like 2016. Everyone else will be recapping the horrible events of the world, so I won’t bother retreading those here. More personally, I don’t have a good excuse for not getting Eight Spaces online this year when it was so perfectly on track up through like...March. Things started falling apart when I realized my computer was dying and could no longer handle coloring the comic, and while I thought getting a new one would be quick, it’s now January and I’m still typing on my wheezing, overheating, old laptop. This bump in the road caused a familiar self-doubt spiral that took me through a detour into the “what if I made an indie game instead?” zone, through the “maybe I should just give up on everything” kingdom, and back into the familiar “maybe novels???” despair pit. I can’t even remember all the projects that rose up over the year to tear my attention away from Eight Spaces, and by the time I made it back on track I realized the writing I’d done for it just wasn’t working for me anymore.

So I’ve spent the last few months trying to find a replacement project, and while I can say I am working on something, I’ve given up on making promises at this point. If something comes of this one I’ll easily be the most surprised person in the room. I know I need to develop more willpower if I ever want to succeed, and part of me thinks that if it doesn’t happen this year...it might just not ever happen, I guess. 

We’ll see. I know usually I end these posts pretty hopefully, and I’ll admit writing this has been weirdly cathartic in a way I didn’t expect. But even if I feel “better” I still don’t feel good about my prospects for 2017. I fully expect to be typing from this same godforsaken bedroom in 2018, still working at my dead end job, still apologizing for things that were totally within my abilities to avoid. I just don’t see any way to get a better living situation in 2017, short of finding $25,000 lying around on the sidewalk. 

The least I can do is draw some pictures, though, so I’ll do my best to at least manage that.

I’m pretty exhausted, so the resolutions post will probably go up tomorrow. I still haven’t decided exactly what’s going on it this year, so I need to sleep on it for now.
