Dream Control (Dream characters)

Dream characters are, in my opinion, the most fun part of having a lucid dream. Dream characters are any sentient thing in your dreams, this can range from people, to animals, to plants, and to anything you give life-like qualities. The thing about these characters is that they are seemingly controlled by your subconscious, so you can ask them questions and get back a random response, or maybe learn something that you didn't know about yourself. These characters can range from all knowing, to naive and idiotic, depends on how you envision them. As anything else in the dream, dream characters are under your control so you can make, summon, destroy, alter, empower, and anything else you want to do to these guys. There are two ways to go about controlling a dream character, you can go the full control route (harder for some, easy for others), or the Mind trick route (I should have used this instead of logical from the very beginning) For the full control route do as always: feel that you are the master of the dream and that the dream is an extension of yourself, you need to envision and FEEL the character changing in whichever way you want them to. For the mind trick route: Maybe find something like a voodoo doll that will let you control the character, or envision them as clay and simply walk up to them and mold them, give them an orb of power, or look at them form a distance and do the finger smashing thing and watch it really happen. As long as you think to yourself "If I do this, this will happen." It should work.

Dream control (Flight)

Firstly, everyone will have different methods when it comes to more specific things like flying, but most ways involve rationalizing it to your brain so that flight doesn't seem completely ludicrous. When it comes to control there are two types of people, very logical minded people, and simply those who put more trust into what they believe. I for one am of the logical variety, and this poses different challenges for each type of person. Logical thinkers Logical thinkers will have a tough time simply jumping up and flying right off the bat, even if they know they are in a dream and they should be able to control it, the brain just doesn't deem flight possible. So how do they learn to fly? They trick their brain by providing a rational explanation to why they should be able to fly. Examples You could look at your shadow and see the shadow sprouting wings, and see that your dream body has actually grown wings. You could wear a suit utilizing zero gravity to rationalize the concept of flight. You could simply believe that you exist on a different phase of existence that lets you "swim" through air. You could be granted the powers by some random person in your dream. Anything like this would work, as long as there is a reason that you can suddenly fly, and this goes for most other powers too. Now for those who naturally can put more faith into what they believe in, it is much simpler, All you have to do is continue to remind yourself, "This is my dream, I am in control." and then you just have to "feel" it happening, since the dream is a part of you tr to manipulate it as if it were a part of your body or mind. And for others all they have to do is try, it only shows the variety of ways that our minds work. Methods At first it helps to imagine as if the air was water, and you can paddle your way through it, then as you become more comfortable you begin to glide, and then to go even faster until you find that you have reached your full flying potential. You could also visualize yourself as very light and you simply float with the breeze. If none of these methods work for you, try experimenting or looking up new ways, in the end you will have your own special style of control anyways.

how long did it take you to lucid dream?

Well counting the dream recall a little less than a month, But don't get discouraged as it is very different for everyone. There are alot of factors (stress, happiness, even attitude) so if it's not happening right away, don't worry. It'll come.

Dream control! (Stabilization)

Now we get to the cool stuff! Dream Control! Now, Let's say you do get a lucid dream and it's your first one ever. Aside from the incredible feeling, you will also be very excited, too much excitement can destabilize the dream and end it all together. When a dream is destabilizing things will become harder to focus on, stuff may spin or just fade away all together, to prevent this you need to anchor yourself to the dream. To do this all you need to do is focus on something in the dream, like looking at a wooden chair, focus on its details. Another popular anchoring technique is to rub your hands together and focus on the friction, once you do this the dream should come back into focus. Some say spinning in a circle can also help to focus on the dream, however I've had no success with it. Again there are many different ways to anchor and different people will have different success rates. Side note: If you can focus hard enough your brain can detail things to such a point that they seem almost more realistic than real life, like you can see the detail;s even from your peripheries.

Persistance!

There are many other techniques and everyone has a different experience with each one, so if one appeals to you, try it out, you never know what will happen. I only listen the most popular and widely used techniques. Also, don't be bummed out if you don't get it right away! This can be easy for some and difficult for others, but EVERYONE CAN DO IT. From the people I've taught I've had those who were persistent and those who gave up on their 2nd try, but those who were persistent eventually learned and are now having their own dream adventures! Don't give up!

Induction Techniques: MILD

MILD stands for Mantra Induced Lucid Dream. Firstly a mantra is something that people repeat to themselves and will hopefully cause a desired effect. For example, If you needed to go pick something up from a friends house you could repeat "Go pick [Insert object here] up from [insert name here]'s house." This should help you remember to go pick that thing up. However, mindless repetition won't help you, you actually have to listen to the words you are saying, realize what they mean and try to embed them into your memory. So basically just focus on what they mean really hard and say it aloud, its always better if you say it aloud, even if it's only a whisper. This applies to dreams too! You could be laying in bed and use a mantra like "I will have a lucid dream tonight." I will include more mantras at the bottom. But after repeating the above mantra and deeply understanding its meaning, try to command your brain to listen to it, and then your brain will feel obligated to make it happen. So if it works you will simply become lucid in your dream because you told your brain to do so. Almost like being able to control it huh? This technique is simply a forced DILD so it will have the same quality of a DILD. Example mantras, "I will have a lucid dream tonight." "I will look at my hands in my dream." "I will perform a dream check in my dream." "Something will happen in my dream to make me lucid." Overall, Quality: see DILD Difficulty: Easy, as long as you can recognize dream checks (looking at your hands, plugging nose and trying to breathe)

Induction Techniques: WILD

Here is one of the more popular ones, despite its difficulty. Understandably so, due to its effectiveness. WILD stands for Wake Induced Lucid Dream. odd name for something that should get you dreaming, right? How it works is: You wake yourself up in the middle of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep and therefore, in the middle of a dream cycle; this makes it easier to enter directly into a dream. Here is the tricky bit. After you wake up, you have to lie still in your normal sleeping position and not make any massive movements like scratching or shifting position. During this time you have to do something to keep your mind awake, (I like to count my breaths) but DO NOT start imagining things, if you do this you will fade off into sleep as if it were any other dream. Do things like counting breaths, counting seconds, heart beats; just something you need to focus on. You will stay doing this for a while and eventually your body will test to see if your mind is awake with things like urges to itch, move, and other seemingly normal things. Ignore these, you are not really feeling that urge, your body is just testing. After you get passed this part you will enter sleep paralysis. This means that your body has gone to sleep and you would normally be already asleep and not experience sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis sounds scary, but it really isn't. You go through it every night subconsciously as it is used to keep you from acting out your dreams in real life. Everyone feels something different when they go through sleep paralysis, some people feel like they are floating or vibrating, others feel as though they are falling or maybe there is a pressure on them. Ignore this too, none of these feelings are real so they are nothing to be afraid of. Some people also experience hallucinations such as shadowy figures near or on top of them or just see little colorful lights floating around. No matter how scary or disorienting it may be, just keep repeating this to yourself: "It's not real." As long as you know and believe in that statement, you will get through it easily. Once you get passed sleep paralysis, the rest is a walk in the park. You may see random images, you can shape these images into the setting of your dream, or you can let yourself fall into one. When you do this you should be lucid from the very beginning. Overall, WILDs are difficult to achieve and take practice (unless it comes naturally to you) They produce more vivid and much longer dreams than could be achieved normally. You have to go through sleep paralysis to get there (this means nothing as long as you remember it's not real) You become Lucid from the very beginning.

Induction Techniques: DILD

NOTICE: Be sure you have good dream recall (1-3 dreams a night) before you try this, because if you try it before you have adequate recall then you won't even be able to remember the lucid dream you had There are MANY types of Lucid Dream Induction Techniques, but in this post I will be focusing on the DILD. DILD stands for Dream Induced Lucid Dream. This method is what I think to be, the "Beginner method" just because I found it to be an easy way of attaining lucidity. This method is also highly unpredictable, you can't control when you will have a lucid dream like you would with some of the other Induction Techniques. Keep in mind that everyone is different and may have different success with different techniques. To DILD what you need to is use dream checks in waking life. Some of my favorite dream checks are looking at my hands, plugging my nose with my fingers and trying to breathe, and trying to push my finger through my hand. In a dream, hands usually have extra fingers or are missing some. The way it works is that if you make a habit of doing dream checks in real life, the habit will carry on into your dream. So if you're dreaming, and you look at your hands because it's a habit and see that you are suddenly missing fingers, then you will know its a dream. The same thing goes for all dream checks. For example, every time I think about lucid dreaming, I do a dream check. Since I think about this a lot, it carries over into my dreams very easily. So try to pick something that works for you. For every technique, there are downsides. The downside to this is that you will have to consciously spend time forcing your self to have a habit, and that these types of Lucid dreams are medium length. I will be going over many things I have mentioned here in later entries so don't worry if you feel lost, I'm just explaining the induction techniques now and I will give examples on dream control and dream logic later on. ALL IN ALL DILD Pros: Essentially subconscious Induction technique after you've got the habit. Dream checks are fun when they finally work. "Easy" way to get into a Lucid Dream. Cons: Unable to control when it happens. Usually not too long of a dream either. you have to spend some of your time getting into a habit. Weigh it however you want, everyone has different success with different techniques.

Dream recall (contd.)

I don't really find the following all that important, but some have had success with it and it never hurts to try. While keeping a Dream Journal (DJ) you may notice a pattern among your dreams, perhaps it is that your dreams tend to always have a fish in them, or maybe there's a lot of water, this could also go for things like conflict or selfless acts. If you see recurring patterns in your dreams, you can use them to help identify when you are lucid. These are called dream signs, if you have one you can use it later when i show you how to actually become Lucid.

First step, Dream recall.

This is most likely the most important step in learning how to lucid dream. Some people say that they simply "Don't have dreams anymore," this is a false statement. You ALWAYS have dreams, but sometimes you don't remember them. Not being able to remember your dreams is usually due to stress, a busy mind, or maybe just a bad night of sleep. Now how does this tie in to Lucid Dreaming you ask? Well you see, in order for you to even make a conscious decision while in the dream, you'd have to be able to remember yourself making it. It's a little confusing but think of it like this. You bring home some milk and put it in the fridge but you never remember doing it, almost as if you weren't there to control yourself, kind of like that. Now, since some people don't remember their dreams (yes, you have more than one dream per night) they will have to work on remembering them, you do this by laying in bed. When you wake up, you are not to move around much because when you wake up you are in a groggy state that is still dreamlike, you should lay there and try as hard as you can to remember as much as you can muster about the dreams you had. Even if you only have arbitrary shapes or feelings, these can help tie into the other memories of the dream until you remember the entire thing. You should also keep a Dream journal, if you check my other blog you can see an example of a Dream journal. A Dream journal is exactly what it sounds like, a journal of your dreams. Having one of these will help you identify patterns in a dream (and possibly trigger lucidity) and provide for a source of entertainment as it is pretty fun to re-read what you've dreamt about. After a few days or a week you should begin to remember parts or even whole dreams until you can remember several dreams from one night. IMPORTANT Never, never, never, EVER let your dream recall fall, because if you do then you have to restart from the very beginning, and as long as you have bad recall, there is a less chance of you remembering a potentially awesome dream. This blog will be dedicated to teaching the masses about the wonders of Lucid Dreaming! For everyone who doesn't know, Lucid Dreaming is when you are conscious of the fact that you are in a dream. Most people have had a Lucid Dream at least once in their lives and probably found it to be really cool, here I will show you various methods to having a Lucid Dream whenever you want. I will take you step by step and if you follow through, you'll be able to lucid dream possibly whenever you want.
