whenever i finish a book and im like “damn that was rly good the characters were cool and deep and that story was awesome” i make the mistake of going online to read goodreads reviews, or instagram comments, or god forbid search a character on tumblr.com, and i am faced with righteous takes of sweaty, braindead women with the reading comprehension and critical thinking skills of a rock. it’s as if the character materialized and personally insulted them and they just have to fucking say something about it. you know what is a normal response to not liking something? what a mature, reasonable reaction is? just fucking put the book down, say “hmm that one wasn’t for me”, maybe donate or give the book to someone who may like it. but no, they take to the tags like locust, sharing all their shitty takes and misinterpretation thinking their take away from the book is some renowned fucking prophecy and only their interpretation is real and true. nothing, and i mean nothing, screams “I’ve never had any deep connection with another human nor have I left my stinky house in years” than posting and fighting online about whether or not a character is good or bad. it is so clear with their black and white thinking that a single argument with them irl would ultimately ruin them and any relationship they may have, it’s like looking through glass. i cannot think of a more pathetic, pessimistic outlook on life than going out of your way to argue that something many people enjoy is inherently bad, and morally wrong. sure, write a review, state your points, we all don’t like the same things, otherwise the world would be pretty fucking boring. but when i am looking through tags and see someone say how horrid a character is, that they and the author shouldn’t be liked and that those who do are bad, i am instantly painted a picture in my mind of someone so incredibly smooth brained and unlikable. go out into the world, meet someone who doesn’t mind-numbingly agree with every negative word that comes out of your mouth, and learn to be a normal fucking human being. touch grass, i guess.
