Today marks the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day. I can’t help but to think of all of the lives affected by HIV/AIDS...including mine. June 14, 2005: A day I will never forget. I received my results from the clinic I had went to a week prior. At 22 years old, I now had HIV. I can’t recall, even now, much of what else happened on that Tuesday afternoon; it was a complete blur. I did not come back in to discuss medications with a doctor. I was in a deeply depressed state. I used alcohol as a form of escapism. It would take me three years before I told my parents. By late 2007, my body began to go through some serious changes. I was hospitalized at least four times for a variety of things including spinal meningitis, food poisoning and diverticulosis. By March ‘08, my weight had dropped drastically. My body was eating itself on the inside to stay alive. I did not know if I would make it to see 25. At that point, I was rushed again to the hospital and I would immediately begin antiretroviral therapy (ART). By 2010, my health my a turn for the better. I would gain weight back, my skin looked healthier and I would become undetectable. This means that the medication used made the virus in my bloodstream so low, that it couldn’t be detected. This also means it is highly unlikely for me to pass the virus onto anyone else. I have remained undetectable since 2010. #U=U As I go to celebrate the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day, I am thankful that my life’s journey wasn’t over during the summer of 2005. I am comforted and emboldened by other survivors who continue to share their stories and experiences. I stand with them as we honor our fallen brothers and sisters. I am thankful for the medical team at OSU and my friends who stepped in to help me survive. That is something to be proud of. It is my testimony and it is my mission to continue living as authentic as I can. I stand today, 13 years later, as a SURVIVOR.
