June is Alzheimer’s and brain awareness month. Alzheimer’s disease is a fatal disease that kills nerve cells and tissues in the brain, affecting the individual’s ability to remember, think, and plan. Both of my paternal grandparents had Alzheimer’s disease and unfortunately, eventually succumbed to it. As frustrating as it was as a caregiver, I will never regret caring for my grandmother. Her brain was basically working like a toddler. I had to bathe her, feed her, and help her walk. Sadly, Alzheimer’s causes them to forget their loved ones. My grandmother didn’t recognize me but she I could tell she felt safe and loved in our home. The FDA just approved a drug to reduce the effects of the disease. Unfortunately though, there is no cure. Who knew I would start 26 like this? The one year I looked forward to my birthday and then this happens 😪 every year I felt so lonely on my birthday but this year, I thought it would be different because I thought I could spend it with my love. However, due to the lockdown, I can’t even do that.
