Dylan and Ciara: the real story
Sam was gone for 6 years. Since there marriage ended, Dylan has not been romantically involved with anyone. Then, as soon as she dies (like literally 48 hours after), he is all of a sudden lighting up a spark with the first female he has any extended period of interaction with. This same someone is a woman that a) he did not particularly get along with the last time they were together, and b) is an alcoholic. None of this is a coincidence, and here’s why.
• It’s almost as if Dylan has been in denial that everything with Sam is over. Even though he knew they had ended and could never realistically be together again, while she was alive there was still a tiny part of him which told him that there would always be a tiny chance and that it would be wrong to be with anyone else while that subconscious hope was still there. Now that she has died, that chance has gone from almost non-existent to completely non-existent and he has told himself he has to finally move on.
• Ever since he broke up with Sam, there has been a piece of Dylan missing. He ignored and didn’t even really notice that this void was there due to his refusal to admit to even himself that he was not really over her. As soon as Sam died, this void become impossible to ignore as she was now completely and physically gone. It was being talked about all around him and his own personal loss that had been there all those years became obvious to him. Ciara is his way of trying to fill the hole that he is afraid of and desperate to be rid of.
• Dylan was drinking whilst he was with Sam. The fact that an alcoholic has come to him for help straight after she has died forces a connection between Ciara and the time in which he was married to Sam. Getting with Ciara is actually just his way of feeling closer to Sam due to the memories that her struggle with alcohol are bringing back for him.
• He has just decided to become a sponsor for Ciara. This is because he partly blames himself and his drinking for the breakdown of his and Sam’s marriage. This breakup is still one of his deepest regrets since he never truly got over Sam and now it’s too late to try and make amends. He wants to help Ciara because he knows the damage that his own drinking did and how it irreversibly took away one of the most important things in his life.
