Warding is a method of protection used to create an energetic safe space around you, your space or an object, it prevents unwanted energies from entering and minimizes the amount of offensive magic you need to perform. Casting a circle is a common temporary form of warding that witches often use, a protection circle is a ward the can be used during any spell work but is only meant to be used at that time. I have another lesson posted on my blog all about protection circles and different types of circles. Besides protection circles there are many other forms of warding that can work better depending on any given situation.
Wards are a very versatile form of magic that can protect a single entity or a space when given enough power. They can be programmed to let certain energies in or none at all making them very useful for many purposes. A ward can even be used to keep an entity out or in. As with anything else it is important to maintain and refresh your wards to protect you.
When to Ward?
Warding along with any other basic protection magic should be one of the first things that you learn and implement in your practice. You can put up a ward if you feel there might be lingering negativity in a certain area in your home, it is useful to banish, cleanse and ward the space to ensure no negativity is able to enter the area.
There does not need to be any negativity present for you to put up a ward. The best practice is to have wards already in place before negative entities can enter the space. Something like wanting to have an energetic barrier around you is good enough cause for you to create a new ward.
Wards can also be used if you feel someone may be sending negative energy or baneful energy your way.
How to Plan for Warding
Planning is key to success with anything in your life; before creating the ward you should know where and how you want this ward to be placed. Feel free to consider the following questions when in the planning process:
What will this ward serve?
What is the purpose of this ward?
How can I give this ward its purpose?
How should I check up on this ward?
What maintenance will this ward have?
Before putting the ward into place make sure to cleanse your space creating a clean slate of energy for the ward to protect. If needed it is key to banish negative energy or entities before commencing with the work.
Note: in a case where you already have wards up and need to banish; the best practice is to take the old ward down, banish and put either put the original ward back up or create a brand new one. The reason for this is because banishing and warding will effectively cancel each other out. If you keep the wards up you run the risk of whatever you just banished getting stuck within your wards.

There are many different types of wards that can be made for whatever you may need them for. All of the forms of wards will either be energy based or physical wards.
Extra Info
It is important to have layers to your protections making them as impenetrable as possible. You can have a multitude of different protections or even layer the wards.
Make sure that you are checking, cleansing and cleaning your wards often. I find it beneficial to have some sort of schedule for this type of work.
Another thing that will be important especially further down the line in your practice is to be specific with your wards. The questions that were mentioned earlier in the post will be beneficial to this.
Lastly, taking care of yourself after setting up a ward is extremely important. This applies to other types of spell work as well. Setting up a ward takes up a lot of energy and can leave you feeling drained and very tired afterwards, make sure once you have set up a ward that you are drinking water and resting.
