He has tried his best, and been as patient as he can. Truly, he has. But what is it they say about leading horses to water…?
“…Morgan. Morgan.”
Upon the third calling (and one rather louder, even panicked than its predecessors) of her name does his tutee look his way – by which point it’s too late anyway. Expecting the worst, he braces himself as her neglected spell-hand sparks and fizzles—
Only for the ‘grand finale’ to be nothing more than a frankly pathetic puff of dark dust.
Pinching the bridge of his nose, Merris sighs, plainly exasperated. “Consider yourself fortunate that we’ve been practising nothing more than basic, low-level casting. Anything more advanced, and you could have caused some injury.” If truth be told, he has always found the young girl’s presence - and, indeed, the presence of all her peers - somehow discomforting, morally. With no disrespect to her, however, he has always wondered whether fighting among the Shepherds was the best thing pragmatically, too: prodigy or not, she always seemed to tend quite often towards absent-mindedness.
Or perhaps he was particularly unfortunate in this regard.
”That shall be all for today. If you haven’t the care to devote yourself wholly to your studies, we would do best to stop wasting both our time and reconvene another time.”
It’s not like she wasn’t listening to him; she can hear his voice, gradually becoming more panicked and shrill. When she finally turns, her spell half complete– it aims toward her instructor, her comrade in arms – and becomes a pathetic speck of dust. A groan passes through her lips at her failure, obviously she is upset by this. She had been concentrating, but after trying to focus on the words and chanting– her thoughts gradually had flown else where.
What else could be magic be used for? Oh, right. Pranks.
Merris wasn’t the most talkative person within their group, from the moment they met he was more so the silent type. He kept to himself, and it was usually her father who went over to talk with him. She recalls her mother also going over to talk with him too, at some point, in attempt to forge bonds that her father had spoke of often. And now, she also was trying to strengthen those ties. He was cooperative, and to be fair – a useful asset on the battlefield from what she observed from afar.
She peers over toward him, a frown already in place. She couldn’t pull one over on him, he’d be able to block it within a minute. Merris was fairly versed in magic, therefore she shouldn’t mess with him especially in his area of expertise. But who else could she prank? There was Noël, or maybe Yarne, but...
“Sorry.” She apologizes genuinely, “It...it won’t happen again! I promise.” His words cut sharp like a knife, her eyes advert from his face briefly, guilt present in her eyes.
Even though their lesson was done, it didn’t mean they were done speaking for the day. There is a mischievous twinkle in her eyes, perhaps there would be a good way to focus on her magic! A handful of ideas came to mind to Morgan, this couldn’t be good.
“Perhaps I can practice my magic through different means?” She quips, taking a step forward toward the Dark Knight, “It’ll be serious, with well thought out planning, of course..”
