Nothing to be Frightened of, Julian Barnes
My choir director, as weâre working on Faureâs Requiem: I mean, you ever have those moments where you see the sun shining through the clouds and you ask yourself, âIs that my dead friend?â
When your teacher says âI really loved the way you played this partâ but you werenât paying attention and have no clue what you did and now will never ever be able to recreate it again

What our parents think we do
What our (non theatre) friends think we do
What we actually do
Things heard/seen in the music building this week:
1) a harmonica playing happy birthday in a minor key 2) someone playing 8-bitted versions of the Bach trio sonatas on their iPad 3) a piano major swearing at their instrument in a practice room for a solid 30 mins 4) two graduate organ majors doing a pedal duet on the theme of âThe Pink Pantherâ for studio class 5) two violinists asleep on the music building couches (pillows and blankets included) for a solid 8 hours 6) two guys getting into a fight (like, almost a fistfight) over counterpoint 7) a conductor yelling âWHERE ARE ALL OF MY COMMUNISTS AT???âÂ
8) the recorder ensemble.
me: ok franz liszt, how many hands does a human have?
liszt: three ?
me: no. a human has two hands. repeat after me. humans have two hands.
liszt: âŠ
liszt: three hands?
guys, we canât lie to ourselves any longer. we all would fuck young Shostakovich
and young Bernstein. Maybe young Beethoven too
One can educate orchestras and one can educate choruses, but ultimately, one should not conduct them. I mean, ultimately you educate them to do the performance within themselves. Â I think thatâs the important element of music.

âThe music on the sheet is a simple potato, and you have to use style and dynamics to mash the potatoes and put all the flavours in there. Donât serve bland potatoes. Serve potatoes I want to eat, like with all the butter and sour cream stuff.â
-our head band director (via thingsmymusicprofessorssay)
i love how the stereotype about music majors is that they think we just have pretentious conversations about different styles and eras of music and only talk in a sophisticated manner about Beethoven and Bach
in reality weâre just a bunch of poor kids sobbing profusely in practice rooms and giving up on our hopes and dreams all the while making every sex joke known to man
