“Emerald Forest Dragon” Wow! My painting is currently on the top page of DeviantArt, so I figured I should post it here on my blog as well! *Please do not reblog This dragon is a fully painted version of one of a series of dragon concept sketches I made depicting the cardinal stones/colors and elements they can be associated with. I had already completed a red Ruby Dragon who resided within the depths of a cavernous mountain- so for the Emerald Dragon I decided to push for a ‘Forest Lord’ appearance! As an entity of a distant wood, this dragon is covered in verdant, swirling bark and crested with branches. I made the ‘frills’ and wing webbing resemble leaves and petals in contrasting autumnal oranges, pinks, purples and reds- and added additional pops of color with the luminescent mushrooms sprouting from the dragon’s perch on an enormous stump. This was an excellent opportunity to try out some leaf brushes with the background foliage, though I used a basic round brush for the tufts of leafy moss growing on the dragon itself! This piece had been put on hold for a long time, and I am so happy to have finally completed it! I hope to progress onto my sapphire, amethyst, diamond, and obsidian dragon paintings- and may add more colors/gemstones as time goes on. Regarding this dragon’s lore- in my mind it is a protector of the deep woods and all of the creatures that dwell therein. Benevolent and long lived, they often sun themselves to catch rays of light akin to the ancient trees that surround them. Shattered Planets - Grave of Man

Finally back to painting again! After a long hiatus (due to wrist tendonitis) I've slowly been working on new pieces for my shop, my personal story project, and the ongoing D&D/Starfinder campaign I take part in! The last year I have been playing a streamed campaign available on Twitch/YouTube called 'Grave of Man'. My fiance and Let's Play Youtuber 'Wanderbot' is our dungeon master, and he creates all of the art assets for the maps and character/creature tokens. I created full paintings and portraits for our main protagonists- Drez Blightclaw (Lizardfolk Druid/Dragon), Greg Geknu (Bugbear Soldier) and Elaryn Cionnath (my Triton Bard). <Spoilers for those who have not caught up with our YouTube series>- After battling our way through undead, a gang led by Orc/Ogre Gorlar, Cultists, Demons, and a clan of mysterious Druids, our heroes were captured and brought to the Druid tree that held the crumbling city of Zagnoth together. Escaping their magic-siphoning cell, they ventured further and discovered the grisly truth behind the Druids' desire to slay the remaining inhabitants of Zagnoth; everyone has been poisoned by eldritch parasites, and must be reincarnated into new forms lest they become monstrosities like the ones have encountered throughout their quest. Unwilling to be reformed, we continued up the boughs of the tree seeking a means to freedom. Then there we were attacked by a gargantuan purple worm! With every slash it emitted more enemies off of its carapace, so my bard Elaryn polymorphed the beast into a fraction of its size, and placed it in a jar with a bottled eldritch worm she had collected from a corpse long ago. It became clear we could not keep the worm (newly corrupted by its companion) contained for long- so Drez hatched a plan to obliterate the worm upon the end of Elaryn's spell- by placing the jar within a spherical wall of force. With polymorph ended the party watched in horror as the worm expanded to its natural size while inside something that could not be broken save by magic itself. Frantically calculating the math, we discovered that our combination of spells coupled with the expanding worm had essentially the explosive power of a fusion bomb. With no means to teleport away from our fatal miscalculation, Drez created yet another sphere around the party (and our new Necromancer allies) and the resulting blast sent us careening into space... <end spoilers> So, now we have transitioned our adventure into a Starfinder campaign! In our upcoming first episode the party has been picked up by space-fisherman Flurf (a fuzzy alien mechanic), unconscious and running out of air. Far from Zagnoth our adventurers must find purpose in a new realm where technology reigns and beings travel freely among the stars... This image is the thumbnail I created for our upcoming series! It features the main cast and the titular 'shattered planet' of Zagnoth in my attempt at a comic-book style with heavy black lines so it can be seen when shrunk down on YouTube. Aelyn - Triton Priestess

In the spirit of Mermay I decided to sketch what my Triton Bard Elaryn's mother would look like!

Throughout the D&D campaign I play with streamer/Youtuber Wanderbots and friends my character has often reminisced about her people and their constant conflict with the Leviathans. While finding her warlock father, Tethos, is Elaryn's main objective, she often refers to her mother as her primary instructor in magic. In our lore female Triton bards/clerics/priestesses are also called 'Songstresses', and use their voices to weave spells that bolster their allies and heal the wounded. This was in part influenced by mythological mermaids and sirens- as they are often depicted using beautiful melodies to entrance sailors. Elaryn wants nothing more than to find her father (who was called to the shore by potentially his own otherworldly warlock patron) and return with him to the ocean and be reunited with Aelyn- but with the surface world imperiled by a cult of eldritch worshipers in the city of Zagnoth it may be some time before the family will be whole again.

Axiom - The Keeper of Ages

A greyscale sketch of one of the main protagonists of my story ‘Clyssus’- Axiom! This is another rendition of his ‘armored’ form sporting the many eyes associated with the ‘Anariok’ pantheon of my tale. I created him about a decade ago and he has definitely evolved over time -from alien cyborg to immortal shapeshifter. In older illustrations his arms could break apart into numerous tendrils in combat, which explains the tube-like material in his upper arms. As the title implies, he was in part what inspired my online moniker!

Axiom is a character shrouded in mystery, namely surrounding his role in the godlike Anariok’s rituals and his appearances in main protagonist Selene’s unwaking mind prior to her arrival on Clyssus. His connection to Clyssus will be pivotal in the efforts of the disparate alien races residing on the planet to stave off the threat of the dark ethereals known as Shades- and perhaps to even rebel against the gods themselves.

I’ve been unable to paint lately due to a sprained wrist, but it seems to be recovering well enough for me to sketch again. I dabbled a bit with color and contrast after finishing the pencil sketch, and could not decide which I liked more for display purposes, so I put up both!

Can’t wait to get back to work on artwork for ‘Clyssus’!

Naija- Voice of Aquaria

A piece of fanart I completed of Naija from the game 'Aquaria'! Years ago one of the first gifts my fiance gave me before we had even started dating was 'Aquaria'. Back then I used an iMac (as it was recommended in college by our art professors), and was dismayed to find that not many video games were Mac compatible having grown up with PCs. I never actually sat down to play it with all of the schoolwork we had- but now that my fiance is a professional gaming Youtuber and I have started a channel of my own for art timelapses and games; I figured it would be exciting to finally play it (albeit on my new PC laptop). Thus far I have only completed the intro and the first 'dungeon', but my first impression is that it is an enchanting Metroidvania with a beautiful score and song-based spellcasting system. I am also fond of the fact that Naija is a kind of merfolk swimming about an underwater realm, as I love swimming with fish, finding shells in deep waters, and roleplaying as a Triton in the D&D campaign I am currently a part of. This piece will be accompanying my Let's Play series as a thumbnail - hence the odd ratio of the canvas. The jellyfish will be removed to allow for the title to sit in the upper right corner, akin to character splash screen! Can't wait to continue playing Aquaria. Grave of Man- Skitter’s New Beard

In our ongoing Youtube Dungeons and Dragons series 'Grave of Man' the goblin rogue of our party, Skitter, has experienced a number of transformations! He was originally a meek enemy minion that was spared by our adventuring party, and ultimately integrated into the heroic effort to save the crumbling material plane of Zagnoth. As a goblin, Skitter's lot in life was to serve orc and ogre overlords as fodder to aid in their conquests- expected to live a short, brutal life where survival was only guaranteed for the mighty. After being spared by Elaryn (my Triton Bard) at the end of a fateful battle, Skitter has served the group as a scout and opener of locked chests and doors. During our journey he has had to face his own kind and his old masters in battle, realizing through his newfound freedom that the friends that he has made value him far more than his kin ever had. At one point in our quest the party stumbles across a mystical Tabaxi merchant name Maerik; a feline possessing rare artifacts as his wares. Skitter purchases a Dwarven belt to grant his small frame greater strength- and ends up acquiring characteristics of the belt's crafters. Within a day Skitter grows a Dwarven beard! Fans of our series have been requesting a bearded portrait of Skitter ever since I crafted his initial facial appearance and final painting- so this is my attempt to give him an alternate, bearded look! *Please do not reblog if your blog is not safe for work!* © Michelle Gonzo. 'Axiom Human Form' - Editing Sketches in Photoshop Tutorial

My first art tutorial! This covers how I digitally ink and edit my sketches. Usually I just adjust the brightness/contrast and fill in areas where the rings on my sketchbook would show- but this is more extensive in that I am fixing a slant in my work and ink the piece (whereas I usually ink traditionally as well). All of the tools I use, from Warp to the Lasso, can also be applied to digital pieces, too!

Keeper of Ages - Summary of Art 2017 *Please do not reblog*

A compilation of pieces I completed from each month of 2017! This was a great year for growth and pushing myself to create new characters and creatures. Four of the characters featured in this are from Wanderbots’ D&D campaign ‘Grave of Man’! I play as Elaryn the Triton Bard (the blue and magenta mer-woman). The rest are personal projects, concept art sketches, and an example of the plush dragons I create custom or for conventions.

After getting a Cintiq last Christmas I have found digital painting to be a much more fluid experience- hence all of the finished digital art! I have been able to work more swiftly and cleanly, which helped me meet some of my goals regarding posting frequency on social media. I also fulfilled another resolution from last year to create a Youtube channel for speedpainting/timelapses of my work and for various gaming series I participate in.

Unfortunately the last week has been rough on me because I developed a wrist injury with my writing/drawing hand. It seems to be healing with the aid of a brace and rest, so I hope to begin sketching and painting again before the end of the year! Since the new year is almost upon us I have mulled over some art-related resolutions for 2018! Many of them are similar to last year’s because one can always do more!

-Continue to work on the art and lore of my original story, ‘Clyssus’. Take steps towards finalizing designs, the script, and eventually beginning my webcomic.  

-Update my Etsy shop with more products after I attend springtime conventions, including new prints. Work on attempting vector-art for enamel pins and chibis!

-After building up some momentum from the above resolutions, start a Patreon or other subscription account to offer exclusive inside looks and rewards.

-Look after my wrist and overall health- take breaks when I need to while drawing and develop strengthening and stretching routines. Exercise more! Thanks to all of my followers and to those enjoy my work- your likes and support help motivate me to keep creating even more! Wishing you all a wonderful Holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Arcane Gryphon Sketch

Another late night sketch from my mini sketchbook! I really love drawing birdlike creatures, and as I began to sketch out the beak and feathers for this portrait I realized it resembled a gryphon! While cropping and cleaning up the paper digitally I also trying new layer properties in photoshop to give my pencil a multi-colored gradient. With the added sigil above its forehead it really does look like a mystical mythical beast! I hope to use the methods I discovered while playing with this to give my traditional sketches and digital linework a boost of color regardless of whether or not I intend to leave then as a sketch or paint them. I've also been having some mild wrist/hand pains lately, so I will likely be putting up small sketches as it may take a tad longer to complete my current digital painting products. Lots of DnD art, mythical creatures, and fanciful characters are still in the works!

Sentinel Armor Speedpaint

Lately I've been challenging myself to sketch traditionally and paint digitally every single day- with some of my sketches serving as the lineart for my paintings! This is a speedpainting/speedcolor of one of my doodles featuring an armor concept for human Sentinels from my story 'Clyssus'. I hope to create unique aesthetics for the gear of each of the alien races of my story and the magic they employ. Humans are unique in that they can attune to any one of the four magics as they are not bound to a single Anariok patron like the other races are. Human armor will likely be futuristic and made of hard materials with v shaped visors and geometric lines. Sentinels (the fiery warrior mages of my universe) are attuned to amber Igni magic, and as such the predominant color scheme is tinged with rusty reds, coppers, bronzes, and golds. All armor, vehicles, weaponry, and devices on Clyssus that employ magic are affixed with numerous 'Sola Stones' that serve as their energy source (hence the orbs). As a speedpaint exercise I did not work this to completion, but I am happy with how much I was able to render the piece within an hour and a half! The painting also retains much of the paper and pencil texture of the original drawing, which adds a little bit more grit that most of my paintings lack. I also recorded my painting process for this piece, so expect a video up on my Youtube channel soon!

Pink Faedra

Another custom dragon ordered off of my Etsy shop! I love the combination of magenta and turquoise blue. I crafted the pattern from scratch and make the dragons with a slightly fuzzy Glitter Fleece (which is no longer being manufactured, so I bought a number of yards of each color so I could keep making animals that sparkle), anti-pill fleece, polyester fill and transparent safety eyes. Can't wait to make more for upcoming conventions! :D

Magic Symbols of Clyssus

Finally finished rendering each of the icon symbols of the primary types of magic found in my personal sci-fantasy story 'Clyssus'! Magic in my universe derives from creatures called Ethereals (or Aethereals, still need to decide!) that are brought into the material realm through rifts in space. They can be small wisps, or immense behemoths- taking the form of beasts, albeit more spectral in nature. Often it is the size and might of the spirit that determines the power it holds, and the alien races of Clyssus frequently hunt them to attain 'Sola Stones'- cabochons that house their energies. These stones are embedded into armor, weapons, vehicles- anything that requires magic to power its systems. If an immensely powerful creature is slain-an Eidolon- its stone can be used to permanently attune an individual to the type of magic it once held- making them into a spellcaster. As such, Sola Stones are highly valued as they are the only means to acquire and replenish magical energies. Like the four godlike Anariok that rule Clyssus, magic manifests in four varieties in the material plane... The purple essence of Lunai governs the mind, illusions, telekinesis, dreams, and learning. Spellcasters that wield it are called Empaths and are often scholars, diplomats, or entertainers. While their powers are not closely tied to physical elements- the ability to influence the perceptions of others is a powerful feat. The amber essence of Igni masters the elements of fire, earth, and metal- along with championing strength and ferocity. Sentinels are warriors that wield its fiery power and are most at home on the battlefield. When in times of peace, those imbued with Igni make excellent craftsmen and are renowned for their prowess in metallurgy. Others find positions as guards, law enforcers, and mercenaries in line with their warrior spirit. The emerald essence of Sylvas encourages harmony with nature and life in its many forms- from flora to fauna. Followers of Sylvas become Druids capable of bonding with beasts, shaping plantlife, and invigorating themselves with primal energy. They make excellent growers, herders, hunters, and healers- ever conscious of nature's cycles. Followers of Sylvas are more apt than other magic users to dwell in the remaining wilds of Clyssus. The azure essence of Ossus is adhered to by Arcanists that manipulate water, frost, shadow, and necromancy. Their skillset best suits soldiers, assassins, and spies, but many can use their powers to identify and ward off death (though their powers are meant to hasten it). Their ability to communicate and temporarily control the deceased also make them exemplary at solving mysteries (from modern crimes to past histories) locked away with the dead. Of the four colors Ossus seem the least represented- but that may be in part because if anyone is best at concealing themselves, it is an Arcanist. The fifth central symbol is the lost icon that depicts the two planes, the duality of the universe- Umbrae. It is closely tied to my two primary protagonists- Selene and Axiom, and encompasses the mystery of the magics of Clyssus. Unlocking its power will be essential if Clyssus is to survive against the growing threat of the dark Ethereals known as Shades. When creating these signs I wanted to use the cabochons as a central focus surrounded by geometric stone/metal split into two parts as an aesthetic theme. The eye, flame, leaf, moon/skull, and yin/yang moons try to embody the forms of magic in a simplified rune. I hope to make more artwork for Clyssus as I begin writing out my outline for the webcomic/graphic novel!

Galaxy Faedra

Excited to show a new custom Faedra plush! I made my own pattern for little fae dragons a couple years ago (even though I am primarily a scifi/fantasy illustrator, I do love to costume and sew!) since I could ever find dragon plushies as a child. The dragons have been a best-seller at the conventions I attend- but between shows I have them available as custom orders on Etsy. The main body is comprised of glitter fleece and the 'accent' color is typically a solid anti-pill fleece. This special dragon features some tie-dye fleece I picked up with the idea that if paired with either black or navy blue glitter fleece so that it would resemble a nebula! My fiance is a Let's Play Youtuber and one of his fans ordered one initially with a black/green color scheme. I offered to try the new tie dye fleece, and I'm so glad that he chose it for his custom dragon! The colors truly do remind me of a colorful starfield in outer space! In the future I definitely intend to use other colors of tie die fleece for my dragon plushies. Fungal Gaian- Drawtober

This is an Inktober sketch influenced by two prompts that aligned from Mythical Inktober and Drawtober's Day 15 prompt- 'Treant' and 'Fungus Collector', respectively. I decided to make another concept sketch for the 'Gaians' of my sci-fantasy tale 'Clyssus'. A race of plantlike beings sculpted by one of the four 'gods' of the planet (the green Anariok called 'Ominar' who governs druidic magic) they are powerful protectors of the forests and jungles of the realm. Though uniformly large in stature, they come in a myriad of varieties, often resembling different types of plants. Some, like the one depicted on my sketch, harbor fungi on their outer layers, while other Gaians are comprised entirely of fungal material. Single minded in their task of maintaining balance in the ecosystem and following the guidance of Ominar, Gaians rarely express differing thoughts or ideas (especially pertaining to their lord's wishes). During the events of my tale a number of Gaians have been transformed into grotesque monsters called the 'Blights' who seek to infect others of their kind and resemble the shadowy beings called 'Shades' from the days of yore. Their presence threatens both the unaffected Gaians and the Felari who also dwell in the forests- and only their patron Ominar may know the answer... if he can be reached through a labyrinth of his own design.

Nautilon Sketch- Drawtober

It's been a busy week, so I'm going to be uploading more Inktober pieces to make up for the days I've missed thus far! This sketch was made for the Day 9 Drawtober prompt 'Nautical Terror'. I decided to mix a number of my favorite sea-creatures to create a new alien leviathan (octopus tentacles, crustacean shell, whale flippers, and a nudibranch face). All in all, this turned out less like a 'terror' and more like a 'gentle giant'. It may even be repurposed as a monster native to the oceans of 'Clyssus' for my original universe's bestiary! From a biological perspective I imagine it serving the same role as a whale in the ecosystem- a large predator that most beasts do not dare trifle with, while they rarely harm anything but its intended prey. For locomotion it would propel itself forward with the swishing or billowing motions of its tendrils and steer with outstretched limbs. Hope to brainstorm a proper name and create more concepts for it and other beasts after Inktober!

Put up the video for my ‘Toxic Fae’ speedpainting! It was made to fit the Drawtober 2017 ‘Toxic Fairy Dust’ Day 5 prompt! Unlike my full paintings (which take anywhere between 10-20 hours) for this I challenged myself to complete it in a couple hours (about 3 in one sitting). 

Definitely hope to make more of these speedpaintings for practice and warmups!

Felari with Faedra Sketch

Got a little behind with Inktober due to other obligations, but I had to make the Day 10 Mythical Inktober prompt (Satyr/Faun) so I could sketch another Felari! This particular male Felari is interacting with a faerie-dragon (Faedra name as a placeholder) also native to the forests where they dwell in harmony with nature. I'll have to make an official bestiary for my universe and a page specifically for them! The Felari are an alien race from my personal sci-fantasy tale 'Clyssus'. Dwelling in the deep forests and jungles of Clyssus, they live a life of solitude alongside the plantlike Gaians and their Anariok patron, Ominar- distrusting outsiders and their technological machinations. Felari instead show a greater aptitude with their own physical prowess, instincts, and bond with the flora and fauna of their new home. There are numerous reasons why the Felari despise city-dwellers and technology so- back on their own homeworld they were forced to serve another species called the Igran (a larger, more demonic appearing version of themselves having diverged into different species over time). It was not until their world had begun dying- stripped of all its natural resources for the gain of the Igran, that they found freedom when Ominar and the other Anariok reached out to them through a dimensional rift and brought as many as they could to Clyssus. The Igran were left to their fate, but the Felari did not wish the past to repeat once more with Clyssus, and made the forest their dominion- vowing to protect it from destruction their own world experienced centuries ago.
