I did this illustration for Narratively, for an article on Nat Love, the emblematic African-American cowboy of the late nineteenth century. I did not know– prior to reading the article– that nearly a third of the Old West cowboys were black, many being former slaves who found work in the booming cattle markets. Virtually all of what is known of Nat Love is derived from his autobiography (which you can find online), but this article, by Ben Nadler, is a good introduction to the man’s life.
Ride or Die Study No.1 - Tschabalala Self
"Tschabalala: Exalting Mother Earth"
When Maya Angelou said, “There is a kind of strength that is almost frightening in Black women. Its as if a steel rod runs right through the head to the feet”, one’s imagination of Black womanhood couldn’t come close to the divine power Black women obtain if not surrounded by or obtain the essence. Black women have always been honored through the arts but it is special when exaltation is coming from a Black woman herself.
Recently, P&E caught up with artist Tschabalala in which she discussed her inspiration for depicting Black women in her artwork as majestic and undefined. READ MORE!

I’m not trying to drown my Sim by building a wall around the pool so my Sim can’t climb out to safety
I’m not taking anything away from my home. I’m not walking to a far away place. I’m not burying a dream. And in the dream I’m not burying, the following do not appear: the far away place, individuals looking like lands, a collection of sadness joy, an intense survival that can be possible. I’m not burying a version of you already in a town and photogenic, a town where cameras have become too full. Neither am I burying a version of me as an intelligent line or flower.
