The storms always seemed just a bit scarier when both her parents weren’t home; her young mind worrying unnecessarily for her father’s safe return from his mission. The pitter patter of tiny feet could be heard through the silent house as she crept towards her parents’ room, nudging the door opened before she slipped inside and crawled under the sheets next to her mother. She was scared and sought the comfort of the kunoichi’s embrace. “Make the thunder stop, Momma.”
She’s not asleep either- but it’s not the storm that bothers her, the rain hitting their roof and leaving long shadows against darkened walls more soothing than frightening. It gives her something to concentrate on, a rhythm and predictability that lulls her into an almost rest.
It’s not his fault and she would never ask that Neji give up missions because he’s wormed his way so far into her life that she has difficulty adjusting when he’s not around, but his absence was always felt, noticed, not something easily endured.
Thunder rolls along in a low rumble and she wonders what sort of shelter he’s found without her there to unseal something reliable as she lifts an arm to make room for their daughter under the blankets. It was easier, sometimes, to find solace in the places he spent a lot of time and she doesn’t begrudge Keiko her attempt at finding the little pieces of her father that he left behind- Tenten’s all but swimming in one of his uniform shirts herself and she draws Keiko closer without complaint, envelopes her in her arms, surrounding them both with the piece of Neji that she’d sought out too.
“There’s an awful lot I’d do for you, Keiko. But I can’t stop the thunder.”
A soft hum disappears into Keiko’s sleep mussed hair as they both shift to get more comfortable, as her daughter’s cheek presses to her chest and Tenten hopes the even beat of her heart is something worth finding comfort in, soothing.
“Without the storm the flowers and trees wouldn’t grow, and we wouldn’t appreciate the sun as much, would we? Sometimes you have to endure a little darkness to find the light.”
She's humming as she enters her father's home study, her hands clasped together behind her back. She rocks on the balls of her feet, watching the elder Hyuga work; waiting for him to turn and acknowledge her presence. It doesn't take him long to do so, he's turned just as she counted to ninety, his brow lofted as he waited for the teenager to speak. "Good afternoon, Papa! It's a lovely day outside and I thought maybe you would like to join me for a walk? We haven't done so in a while now."
It’s quiet in his home, something he hasn’t known since the births of his children. A good time for him to get some work done, he decided, while the serenity of the moment lasted. Keiko and Ryuu were due to return home at any given moment from their mission. Their mother won’t return for another week, having just embarked on her own mission only two short days before, leaving the man of the house alone behind those four walls.
He’d settled into his home office; the scrolls he’d been putting off reading for some time now sprawled out in front of him as he read each one; taking any notes that were necessary. He wasn’t sure how much time had passed since he’d sat down, or when his daughter had walked into their home. But the next thing he knew, he felt the sensation of being watched before he’d turned his head to see the teen standing there; a soft smile on her lips. His brow irked, waiting for her to tell him whatever was on her mind. It wasn’t every day that his daughter actively seeks him out. He was lucky if he got to see her any other time other than dinner if he was being honest.
When she mentioned joining her for a walk, he wasn’t sure how he should react. Keiko was now seventeen, entirely too independent and reluctant to spend any time with either of her parents unless she was forced to do so. So, to have her request that he join her almost made his heart jump out of his throat. But, he doesn’t keep her waiting for his reply for long. With a quick nod of his head, he’s getting to his feet before moving to join his daughter at the door. His arm is offered; Keiko gently hooking hers in the crook before they’re off to the main entrance. It wasn’t every day he received such a treat.
They stop only briefly to pull their sandals on before leaving the home; stepping into the warmth of the spring afternoon. He can feel the younger Hyuga leaning against his bicep as they walk; taking in the beauty of a new spring season. The cherry blossoms will be opening up soon; the annual cherry blossom festival fast approaching. He wondered, briefly, if his daughter would accompany himself, his wife and her brother to the festival this year unlike the year before when she went with a group of friends. He’s positive he already knows the answer to that. And he’s not angry that she would prefer to go with her friends. She’s older now. And he has to accept the fact that his little girl isn’t quite so little anymore. But for now, he’ll accept any time he can get with her whenever she offers it. Since moments like these are so few, far and in between.

Haruhi gave a soft chuckle, “Oh trust me, you’re not the only one who wants to. My teammates both have had their swing at him… Literally at as a matter of fact.”
Oh the morbid joy of watching both Nikkou and Akira beat up Keiichi for her. “So its no big deal, maybe one day he’ll finally learn his lesson… Hopefully.”
“For his sake and my sanity, I really hope that he does. That, or he figures out that he can’t continue to pull stunts like that on me, especially if Papa is around,” Keiko mused thoughtfully. Her chopsticks were pressed to her bottom lip, pale eyes glancing up at the ceiling of the establishment. ‘Knowing Papa, he’d probably close that kid’s chakra points.”
