âClearly. But itâs still something to write for our papers. Extra credit information?â
âIâm not quite sure theyâll allow such a useless piece of information. But weâre fighting a losing battle here, might as well include it.â
Evie couldnât stop one corner of her mouth from curving upward. âDayton. Thatâs a lovely name.â Evie eyed Kellan as he looked somberly at his wrist. âOlder brother? Does he go to school here? What year is he? What house is he?â This is what Iâm supposed to do, right? This is how I make friends? I get to know them.
Kellan hesitated for a moment. He didnât exactly know what to say, he didnât talk about his brother much. âUm, well. He doesnât go to school here anymore, heâs quite a bit older than me. He finished school the year before I started first year. I donât remember much of him, I havenât seen him since I was eleven. Iâm pretty sure he was a Gryffindor, though. I donât know where he is. He doesnât write... I donât even know if heâs still alive, honestly.â This was a big thing for Kellan to talk about. He slowly watched his patronus fade away while he was thinking about it.
âA while now. I am not sure what my dad and uncle did that summer, but that was all I could get out of them. Seriously weird, and possibly messed up.â
âI donât think you need any more information about that summer. If they put a diaper on a warewolf, who knows what else happened.â
Quinnâs laugh reverberated against the cold cobblestone. âNot a bad plan.â He shook his head, thinking about instead what was wrong with everyone else. âNo one should spend that long with someone else in their head. Itâs unhealthy. I could slap him around for you. Iâm not above hitting the GM,â he volunteered. It would probably look bad shoving around such a scrawny kid. Maybe just a nice bucket of ice cold water. âItâs gonna be weird for a long time, but I wouldnât get over it. Youâd be lying to yourself, if you thought you did,â he said with a rueful smile. âWould suck to go through that again, wouldnât it?â They reached the end of the tunnel and he pushed up the trap door, where they found themselves behind one of the empty stores up for lease. Behind them was the short trail up to the Shrieking Shack. He climbed out, and reached down to help Kellan up.
Kellan was taken aback at how well Quinn understood him and by how much he seemed to relate. âWell, uh. Thanks for the offer but Iâm okay. I think I just need to let out some frustration. Iâve over exaggerated a little bit, itâs not really as bad as I tend to make it out to be.â They reached the end of the tunnel and Kellan grabbed on to Quinnâs hand with his offer to help him out. Once out he looked around, âIâve never been to this part of Hogsmade before. I usually stick to Honeydukes, Iâm kind of addicted to candy.â He then noticed the trail behind them, âIâm assuming weâre going that way?â
âOh, come on. Havenât you ever loved a name so much? Or loved a person so much? Maybe you admired them, or looked up to them. Someone you used to be or someone you want to become? Thatâs what a patronus is for: to snuff out the darkness and bring new light. So maybe naming it after someone you used to be will help you in pushing it out, or after someone you strive to be could help with your confidence. Just suggestions, of course, itâs your patronus.â
Kellan thought for a moment, and without hesitation he replied, âDayton,â It was his older brotherâs name. He missed his brother a lot, but he didnât have any information about his whereabouts or what he was doing. His parentâs hardly even mentioned his name anymore, âAfter my older brother.â He looked down at his wrist, he always wore a leather bracelet around it, it was the last thing his brother gave him before leaving.

Cracking open his textbook, Fletcher remarked casually to his study partner. âDude, take my word for it. Werewolves really donât like it when you put them in diapers.â
Kellanâs eyebrows raised, âShould I bother asking how you have that information?â
âOh ha ha ha,â she laughed sarcastically while bumping his hip. âIf i carried that much around Iâd never get the stuff off me for the rest of my life. And itâs not my fault it gets into everything. I can and have gone weeks without it but it will pop up somewhere. They call it the herpes of the craft world for a reason.â She let out an exaggerated sigh of relief. âOh, good. Seems almost like everyone around here is obsessed with flying. I mean, if we were meant to fly weâd have wings. I donât get whatâs so wrong with having your feet on the ground. You canât dance up in the air.â
Kellan laughed, âIâve never heard that about glitter, but I believe you. The stuff sticks to everything, and doesnât come off for days. Not that Iâm complaining, though. Glitter adds a lot of fun to otherwise boring things.â He laughed with her, âI agree. If we were supposed to fly we should have wings. But I really love quidditch, Iâm not going to lie. I go to every game, I think itâs amazing.â
A Blossoming Friendship;; Kellan & Cat
Nose deep in her book, Cat had forgotten the rest of the world as she sat in the sunlight and tried to memorize the uses of Mandrakes and Ministry laws based upon them. Herbology was that one subject that she could have been good at if she tried, and she did try very hard indeed. Not bothering to look up from her book, the redhead was startled, jumping her in her seat when she was faced by the Gryffindor, fresh out of class. She could tell by the messy vibes she could feel. It was a no-brainer, really.
Eyebrows raised warily, the Latina recognized the boy. Well, he wasnât a boy before last year, and like some people of her house, Catalina had some trouble adjusting to that. Even though it didnât seem to affect her in anyway, it still bothered her in the slightest because it wasnât in order and her social interactions would be halted momentarily. KaeâKellan. He liked to be called Kellen. It was mentioned multiple times.
Her own speech was altered and her mouth opened and closed like a fish. âSiâŠof course.â And with that, she picked up her book bag and moved to the far right, giving Kellan enough space to sit down in peace. It was strange; this would mark the first time she would interact with him since last year, when they shared a class or two together and they might have interacted over spare parchment or a textbook.
Kellan could feel the uncertainty coming from her. She looked slightly uncomfortable, but this was just an excuse to enlighten another person that what he was going through was perfectly normal, and nothing to be upset about. He smiled, âThanks!â He sat down beside her in the shaded side, and let out a relaxed breath.
He took his bag off of his shoulder and pulled out his DADA textbook. Heâs been having trouble with learning counter-jinxes and needed to get as much studying in before the O.W.L.s. Kellan looked over at the girl, he had remembered her from some of his classes in the previous years, she always had extra parchment when he forgot his. âCat, right?â he asked her, he was certain it was her, âWe had DADA together last year if I recall correctly. Wouldnât surprise me if you donât remember me though, I tend to blend in with my surroundings.â Kellan let out a small laugh in attempts to calm the girl down about his transition.
He looked over at the book she was reading, âReading up on mandrakes are you?â He asked in attempts to make conversation. âMandrakes are certainly interesting. Used for all sorts of things. I was knocked out by one in my first year, actually. I donât remember much of the incident, I just remember waking up in the hospital wing dazed and confused. My roommates were all really concerned for me, they brought me a basket with fruit and stuffies and stuff in it. It was kind of nice, honestly.â
Dark Arts Lesson ;; Kellan &Â Xanthe
Xanthe watched the change of expression and wondered if sheâd said something wrong. She was sure that sheâd seen Kaeyln at book and chess club, but maybe sheâd been mistaken. She watched as the fifth year perked up and informed her of who he really was. âOh, Kellan. Okay!â Xanthe remembered Kaelyn as a girl, but she could definitely accept Kellan as a man, it wouldnât be that hard. âOh of course! Kellan, Iâm trying to re-associate your face with the name. Iâm glad you get to be who you are, Kellan.â She kept repeating the name in hopes she would not slip up and upset the boy. Xanthe smiled and nodded, âNot uncomfortable, at all. It doesnât change anything, silly boy. This is you! Hi.â
âOh, thanks!â She said as she too started to grab the massive amount of books sheâd brought. âI didnât know what we were going to work on, so I brought everything. Iâve been rereading and outlining! Iâm super excited to do some more tutoring! Well then, I probably have it some where, so let me see your book and chapter number.â Sheâd organized the books in stacks based on the year sheâd used them and then grabbed the fifth year stack. Xanthe seated herself in the chair heâd offered and turned to him with a smile. âOh, of course! Thatâs nice, I know some kids that just dash right out of class and canât be bothered to put anything extra work in. Iâm Xanthe Prescott, Iâm a seventh year Slytherin. I really want to go to Cambridge like my father, some day. I lovebooks. If you ever need to find me Iâm normally here, in that little nook over there. I was trying to experiment with replacing some potion ingredients, but that kind of blew up in my face. I probably should have listened to August, but I just had to fail for myself to know. You have to try, right? Speaking of August, Iâm not the best with flying⊠but I love cheering my team on. They look so cool in mid-air!â
Kellan couldnât help to grin like an idiot when Xanthe kept repeating his name and instantly accepting him. It usually took people a few days or weeks to adjust, but Xanthe seemed to catch on right away. He would forever think highly of her because of this. âThank you for being so nice about it. I really appreciate it, more than I can express. It really does mean a lot to me.â
The boy listened to the girl introduce herself, and Kellan was over the moon about how enthusiastic she was about... Well just about everything. He was glad to have someone tutoring him with high such high energy, and someone who seemed to care to much. âOh, you like Quidditch?â While Kellan didnât enjoy flying all too much, he never missed a game. âI enjoy watching aswell. Iâm not much of a flyer either, heights have never been my favourite thing.âÂ
He opened up his textbook to where he needed to review, and began to talk about himself. âWell itâs nice to know you better, Xanthe! Iâm Kellan, fifth year Gryffindor. I enjoy watching Quidditch, playing chess and Iâve been known to LARP on occasion. Thatâs âlive action role-playingâ if you didnât know. I donât really know what I want to be when I grow up. Iâm quite average at just about everything. And thatâs about it for me.â He smiled, âSo, Iâm having issues with counter-jinxes if youâre any good at those. Iâm also a little bit lost on defensive charms, since Iâve never had to use them before theyâre a bit more difficult for me to grasp.â
Kizzie shrugged her shoulders. âYouâre very welcome. If you have any problem with some idiots send âem to me. IâllâŠthrow glitter in their eyes and kick âem in the shins. Iâm scrappy yâknow!â she curled her fingers into fists and mimed punching the air. âOkay, as long as the viewâs on the ground and not up in the air on a broom. Tall heights make me dizzy.â
Kellan laughed, âDo you just have an unlimited supply of glitter in your pockets? I see the stuff all over the place. And donât worry, our feet will remain firmly on the ground, Iâm not much of a flyer either.â
âYou gotta make matches fast so they donât explode,â Rowan explained, fingertips resting on her own cards. âPutting em down on the table is fine. But we go til thereâs no cards left, and the one with the most pairs wins. Easy enough. Go!â With a flick of her wrist, the smoking cards were in her hands and she flipped through, looking for pairs.
Kellan nodded and picked up his cards. He instantly found a pair and threw them down on the table, âHey this isnât so hard!â He exclaimed. He picked up another card and before he knew it, it exploded in his hands, âWell, maybe I spoke too soon.â
âI would if I didnât have a thing against making plans.â Aine told him. âTheyâre too much commitment as a whole. You shouldnât expect a lot of things out of me. Divinationâs about to end though and I know Reagan walks through this hall to go to the restroom after this class, so Iâve got to bounce before Iâm spotted. And so I will see you around, Kellan.â
âOh... Uh.. Okay then.â He was slightly discouraged that the girl didnât want to make plans with him, but he just shrugged it off, âYeah, my free period is almost over and I should probably head off to class too. Nice chatting with you, Aine.â He waved goodbye at his acquaintance, and turned, walking in the opposite direction of her.
âIt is. Nala was always the Disney character I related to most. She stood up for what she believed in. She didnât really have a place, but eventually she found her fit. Sheâs strong, independent, sure of herself. I admire that.â Evie instantly became excited. âYes! You should! Iâve found it helped me in casting my patronus a lot. It gives it more identity and solidity, so itâs easier to grasp.â
Kellan smiled, Nala was also one of his favourite characters, and he loved hearing the reasons Evie liked her so much since he felt the same way. He was happy about her enthusiasm about naming his patronus, but was instantly discouraged when he couldnât think of a name. âIâm no good at naming things. Whatâs a good name for a penguin? I canât even think of one.â
Dark Arts Lesson ;; Kellan &Â Xanthe
Xanthe was a little down on herself from her recent potion experiment flop. Sheâd almost blown herself up and thought it best to take a break from extra potions for a while. She dove farther into her school work and had secluded herself. She was doing her absolute best in Defense Against the Dark Arts, she thrived off of the success she needed so badly. Sheâd offered her services at the beginning of the year to several teachers, but had only been called on for that duty once or twice. Professor Doru, after one class, pulled her aside and asked her to meet for tutoring at 7 P.M. in the library. Xanthe smiled the biggest smile and that whole week she pulled out all of her books on DADA. Her collection ranged from her old first year book, which her father happily sent to her, all the way up until her current material. She poured over them, outlining main points in the chapters and rereading her old essays.
Soon enough, Thursday came. Xanthe carried a mountain of books and materials to the table nearest to the door and swept into the library, looking for her charge. She hoped the student sheâd be helping was at least willing to put a little effort forward. She frowned at the thought of Beau using her offer for tutoring or help as an excuse to get her on a date. She had been looking forward to actually helping someone and hoped it was just that. She saw at one of the other tables in the front, Kaelyn was seated with all her materials. Xanthe recalled very vaguely that Kaelyn was in chess and book club with her. Xanthe believed the girl was a fifth year Gryffindor.
âThat would be me!â She said, âIâm Xanthe Prescott and youâre Kaelyn McNamara from book and chess club, right?âÂ
Kellan was pleased to hear that Xanthe was going to be his tutor, but his smile slightly turned down at the use of his birth name. He knew Xanthe didnât know him that well and she probably didnât know that he was trans, so his smile perked back up as he was correcting her, âOh, um. Itâs actually Kellan. Iâm, uh, Iâm trans...â He didnât have to explain himself most times, and usually felt awkward trying to, but he wasnât offended considering the girl first met him as Kaelyn. âIf you donât mind, Iâd prefer male pronouns and the name Kellan. I know it might be confusing or hard since when we first met I was a girl, but this is who I actually am. And, Iâm not offended or anything, most people get uncomfortable with the topic... Including me.â
With that being out of the way, he offered the girl the chair beside him, and helped her with the massive amounts of books she brought with her, âWhyâd you bring so much? I only need help with a couple of chapters, Iâve got most of this under my belt. Itâs just that I got a bad grade on our last test, and figured some extra tutoring wouldnât hurt.â Once the two of them got settled he asked, âDo you mind if we get to know each other a bit before diving into everything? I think I would learn from you better and easier if I know what kind of person you are, I always spend time after class asking our Professors questions, just to get more comfortable.â
Dark Arts Lesson ;; Kellan &Â Xanthe
Kellan was quite disappointed in himself. His grades were usually average, usually ranging between Aâs and Bâs. He had just received a paper back that was a D-, the lowest grade heâs ever gotten in his life. Flustered and unsure what to do about this, he asked Professor Doru for advice on how to fix this unspeakable grade, and was suggested a tutor. The Professor told him that there was a perfect tutor that would be able to help Kellan, and that she would be honored to set them up. He agreed, and was told to meet his tutor in the library at 7 P.M. on Thursday.
Thursday rolled around and Kellan was on his way to the library. He was unsure of who his tutor was going to be, and slightly nervous about the session, he was hoping it would be someone he was at least an acquaintance with. He reached the library, went in and sat down at one of the front tables, that way he could keep an eye on everyone who walked in. He was about fifteen minutes early, which gave him time to set up his books to the pages he needed to study. He heard someone walk in, he looked up and saw Xanthe, âOh please, tell me youâre my tutor!â He knew the girl from chess club, and book club. He knew she was an exceptional student, and that he would be lucky to have someone as smart as she was to teach him what he needed to know.
