Mayor Kasim Reed's "Snowmageddon" PR Pitfalls
There is no question that the recent âSnowmagedden Atlantaâ fiasco earlier this week was a complete and total disaster. The city of Atlanta was brought to its knees by a mere 3 inches of snow which caused countless traffic accidents and forced people to take shelter in grocery stores and worse, children having to spend the night at school.Â
The debate of who is to blame will vary depending on whom you ask but one thing that is for sure is the manner in which Atlantaâs Mayor Kasim Reed and Governor Nathan Deal initially handled the media was an absolute PR fail.
This post is not about who was at fault but more so tips for how both men could have handled the media differently.
 Never Get Defensive
Although under a substantial amount of pressure, Mayor Reed made the crucial mistake of becoming defensive during his initial interview thus coming off as arrogant and insensitive. A fundamental PR strategy when dealing with the media in a time of crisis is to maintain a neutral tone as well as relaxed body language.
 Never Point the Finger
Your response should never place blame on someone elseâŚeven if youâre not at fault. The better response would be to acknowledge your role in the situation and genuinely empathize with those adversely affected.
 Always Refocus on the Positive
Of course the media is going to rehash the events that took place as well as pressure you for answers. The most appropriate response is to validate the concerns and discuss how you can prevent these mistakes in the future. The most important part of this point is to actually follow through. A great strategy would be to take your audience through the process of reform in an effort regain their trust.
A lot of faith has been lost in our local government officials but hopefully they will take heed to sound PR advice and set out on a campaign to repair the damage as well as their image.
I came...did what I needed to do...now it's back to #Atlanta to keep the #hustle going. @sadonnercandles @LuckyMagazine @MarieClaireMag #pr #press #media #desksides #NYC #fashionpr #beauty #lifestyle #luxury #soy #candle

3 Essential Skills for PR
Goal-Setting
The ability to create concrete goals, both long and short term, is vital. Goals are the foundation for all strategies going forward and must be solid in order to be effective. While goals can be revised based on brand growth, establishing them prior to plan implementation helps to prevent unnecessary confusion. Want to have a more impactful social media presence? Interested in another target market? Make record of your goals and take satisfaction in checking them off one by one.
Networking
Weâve all heard the old adage: âItâs not what you know, itâs who you knowââŚbut it could not be truer for a publicist. As people are the cornerstone of the public relations industry, you must be open to meeting ALL TYPES OF PEOPLE! This means fine-tuning your networking skills and the best way to do so is to dive in headfirstâŚget out and meet some strangers! Networking will teach you to be relatable and personable. Exchange business cards and keep in touch. You never know how you will be able to work together in the future.Â
Social Media Savvy
Social media is a wonderful and cost efficient way to create brand awareness for your client, however using it in the effective way is what will make your clients brand flourish. The key to effective social media is to be consistent and engage. The goal is to create an ongoing dialogue between the brand and the audience, which can be achieved by sharing client news, relevant current affairs and joining conversations initiated by others.
What are some other important skills to be a successful publicist?
Finding Your PR Passion
According to PRSA, the official definition of public relations is: âa strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.â In recent years with the introduction of social media, the public relations spectrum has broadened quite a bit making it difficult for some to determine their true PR passion.
So how does one find their niche or what area best suits them in the world of public relations? Check out this activity to get you started.
1. DROP THE DIGITAL: I love my iGadgets just as much as the next pr girl but when it comes to tapping into your inner voice, a good ol fashioned pen and paper are best. This will serve as your personal brainstorming session so you must remain open and jot down every idea or thought of what youâd like to do. Itâs important to keep your mind open and allow the ideas to flowâŚ.you can edit later.
2. CENTER YOURSELF: Write your name in the middle of the paper and draw a circle around it. Next, draw lines coming out of that circle, as much as you need, and label those lines with what would you like to do and what are you good at. Be sure to include not only your strengths but also weaknesses you are willing to strengthen?
3. RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH: Take time to completely immerse yourself in researching prominent individuals within your desired area(s) of PR. You are likely to find articles and other useful content that will provide valuable insight into their day-to-day professional life.
4. GET EXPERIENCE: Reach out to your network and inquire about opportunities to shadow or intern. Gaining first-hand experience will be the real test to see if this particular area of PR will be a good fit for you.
The purpose of this activity is to get you organized and focused so that you can identify where your true PR passion liesâŚ.good luck!!!!
