I tend to group mine by effect, which I suppose is not too dissimilar from your method. Their effect also tends to correspond to their rarity-- not always, but often enough that it may as well be sorted that way, too...
I will admit, I have not sampled many of my ingredients in their raw form. Typically, they undergo a transformation of sorts before ingested... Do you have a favorite?
