Here’s some more prop and set deets from Un Garçon et sa Bête.
I fabricated the fountain, stone benches, hedges, earthy floor, and a couple of those shapely trees, which are based off Sarah Jaques’ design.
The little cabinets are just wood blocks with tiny door handles from Hobby Lobby stuck on. (they’re a little dinged up from being in storage, but they looked good on camera I swear!)

It was important for the hedges in Un Garçon et sa Bête to be modular (and cheap!) because there were so many shots set in and around the hedge maze garden. Originally, we were going to paint foam and dust it with oregano, but that was too expensive, so the hedges are actually just styrofoam wrapped in aluminum foil and given a healthy coating of spray paint, glue, oregano, parsley flakes, and Crystal Clear. They held up much better than expected! But we did get ants.
The interior walls of the mansion in Un Garçon et Sa Bête were designed and composited in Photoshop, printed on paper, and glued to 12 inch wide masonite panels. Tiny wood columns from the doll house section of a hobby store hid the edge where two panels meet. This made the sets easily modifiable. I found some bargain bin lace and we glued that to wood, adorning it with hot glue to mimic fancy crown molding. The floor was peel and stick vinyl “tile”. On a short film with a tight budget and an even tighter deadline, the best solution is often the quickest and cheapest.
I never posted this and I still like it! a quick digital painting in Photoshop of my stop-motion professor.
